But as long as the aliens don't have tri-color headlight eyes this time, the movie should be pretty good. And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!" |

Edit: If you look closely you will see a split-second view of one of the Martian ships http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/waroftheworlds/ [ March 18, 2005, 04:58 PM: Message edited by: Gimpy ] |

Firstly, they seem to have made no effort to stay true to the book. The book was set in Britain at the turn of the last century. This film is set in America (not a problem yet) in the modern day. (There we go) Not only that, but the plot now revolves around the typical American family. So now we have Deep Impact with aliens. Joy. Seriously, almost every modern disaster movie has the same plot. A single family escapes some world-destroying event, finds the true meaning of love and happiness and lives happily ever after. It's generic movie plot #753. I don't have that much problem with the modernisation of the film. What I do have a problem with is Hollywood's obsession with taking classic films/books and butchering the plot to sell it to the stupid and oblivious. Just once I'd like to see Hollywood stick vaguely to the plot of a book or older film. Hitch-hiker's Guide did that, plus the script was written mostly by Douglas Adams. Lord of the Rings even managed it. (And don't start off about Tom Bombadil. He was the most boring character in the book.) So why can't these lot? Bah. If I don't see a Tripod in the movie, there will be murder. |

Plus, you forget that it's Steven Speilberg, a guy who made some of the best movies of the last 25 years, directing. If it was Roland Emmerich (director of Independance Day) or Renny Harlin (director of many mindless flicks) directing, then you would have better cause for worry. |
