The movie is based on the Philip K. **** novel (other Philip K. **** adaptations include Blade Runner, Minority Report, and Paycheck). However, what Richard Linklater did is he filmed the movie, then, like the movie Waking Life, he animated over it. The end result is this weird, kind of messed up, look that is really interesting.
