It seems remaking old horror movies is the "in" thing these days.

So, this topic is to talk about remakes that are in development.

There are a few remakes out there, but one of the most interesting is that the fact that Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures is going to be producing a remake of The Evil Dead.

That is definitely something that would make the purists scream "foul" don't you think?

Manos: The Hands of Fate. Hands down, pun intended.
While not as good as the skullf*** movies of today, it'd still probably gather a big audience the first day, and after that, bomb just like in the past.
I say Disney should do it, because the guy who did the original Manos commited suicide after the movie, and that'd be a clean way to get rid of Disney.

Here's what AICN said about the Evil Dead remake (as well as Evil Dead 4) a few months ago):
Quote:
Raimi to direct EVIL DEAD 4... as well as produce EVIL DEAD remake!

Hey folks, Harry here with the most exciting film news since all the hubbub started on Ray Harryhausen working on a new SINBAD film. While nothing could be that cool... a New Bruce Campbell as Ash being directed by Sam Raimi movie... well - that's unspeakably cool. And something we've all been dreaming of seeing become a reality. Meanwhile - Sam is also going to be Producing with his "THE GRUDGE" & "THE BOOGEYMAN" company... GHOST HOUSE PICTURES - a remake of EVIL DEAD 1 & 2 (as a single film) to be directed by a talent with a fresh vision for it. At least - that's what he told Bloody-Disgusting.Com in a recent interview (where you'll find more details!)

The rumor I keep hearing is that Raimi is courting Chan Wook Park to do that remake - though by no means is that a done deal. Park is scheduled to shoot and finish at least 2 other films in South Korea that he's announced. And GHOST HOUSE might be wanting that project on a more accelerated pace. Personally... I just want GHOST HOUSE to get shooting on 30 DAYS OF NIGHT. That's the property they own that most cries to be a movie, right now. At least, in my opinion...
I clicked the Bloody-Disgusting link and here are some quotes about the remake direct from Sam Raimi:
Quote:
"There will be an Evil Dead 4, and there will ALSO be an Evil Dead Remake. The remake will be produced by Ghost House pictures, and it will star a new cast and a completely new director. The point of Ghost House is that we want to bring new directors (like Takashi Shimizu of "the Grudge") to Hollywood and give them a chnace to make a good horror film."
Why does he want to do a remake?
Quote:
"I love the original Dawn of the Dead, and I also really enjoyed the new Dawn of the Dead. I mean, they are both really great horror films. I want to let somebody with a fresh vision bring The Evil Dead to a new generation and a new audience with a different vision..."
A little aside about Ghost House Pictures: Ghost House is the second major horror movie production company to come out in recent years (the other being Joel Silver and Robert Zemeckis' Dark Castle Entertainment). In less than a year, the company already has one hit (The Grudge) and one miss (Boogeyman). It will be interesting to see how this company's future releases (according to IMDB there are about 5 films in development -- including the Evil Dead remake and sequel to The Grudge) turn out.

Actually, only the actor who played Torgo committed suicide. But he had a drug problem and was struggling with depression even before the movie.

That's a little harsh. Even though, from a business end, Disney made some bad choices (such as making worthless straight to video sequels to all their movies), they are still the company that I grew up watching.

Don't wish them dead, just wish for better management.

From the IMDB:
Quote:
Often considered to be a remake of The Evil Dead, however this is not accurate. The rights to show scenes from the original could not be obtained to re-cap what happened, so they recreated the beginning to explain how Ash got to the cabin, a headless Linda, etc.
So, in other words, the only thing that resembles a remake in Evil Dead II is the beginning (which I think greatly condenses the plot of the original movie)
