Please note that this topic is NOT about whether or not you love or hate M Night Shyamalan. I'm really sick of hearing all that, so I thought I would say it up front. Generally, if you hate Shyamalan and everything he stands for, DON'T even bother replying.

What this topic IS about is to tell everyone that M Night Shamalan's next movie (I believe this is his 7th -- he had two movies before Sixth Sense) has been announced.

The movie will be called "Lady in the Water" and it has the following plot outline:
This is the story of a superintendent of an apartment complex in Philadelphia who discovers a sea nymph living in the building's swimming pool.

For those of you who don't know, "Sea Nymph" is a fancy name for Mermaid. It seems to be a straightforward plot (but, as the case usually is with this director, there is probably more than meets the eye).

The film is currently set to be released on July 21st, 2006 on it will be distributed by Warner Bros this time (perhaps Shyamalan didn't like how The Village was marketed by Touchtone)

This sounds a bit different from his usual style, but, whatever.

What were the two movies he made before the Sixth Sense?

So was The Village, though it was marketed as a horror movie.

Looking forward to it, sounds interesting.

His first film was an Independant Film, called "Praying With Anger, in 1992. Then he directed "Wide Awake" in 1998.

Also, about this movie being different about his usual style, only The Sixth Sense and Signs can be called true thrillers. Unbreakable and The Village were more dramas than anything else.

I thought the ending ruined the whole movie.

I don't like Shyamalan, but, given that I've ended up seeing his past four movies in the theater, I'll probably find myself shelling out for this one, too. (Especially given that it's coming out in July. My pals at summer camp always manage to con me into seeing the most horrific crap imaginable.)

Mermaids, eh? Interesting choice. I wonder if Shyamalan will opt for a different tone to coincide with the more fairy tale-like subject matter.

Well sure, Shyamalan doesn't always do thrillers, but this film sounds COMPLETELY different from his other movies. It sounds like run-of-the-mill fantasy.

The first two stars have been announced.

Paul Giamatti will be playing the main character, while Bryce Dallas Howard makes her second appearance in an M Night Shyamalan movie (possibly as the Sea Nymph???).

Did you notice, with the exception of Signs, every M Night Shyamalan film (from Sixth Sense up) featured an actor from the previous film reappearing.

Sixth Sense -> Unbreakable (Bruce Willis) -> Signs (none) -> The Village (Joaquin Phoenix) -> Lady In the Water (Bryce Dallas Howard)

Mermaid? Sounds weird, but then again I can see how you could make a mermaid scary.

I also remember hearing all of his movies are something like 2 hours 7 minutes, not intentionally.

I was a little surprised to see the teaser trailer for this film, the next my M. Night Shyamalan, before Harry Potter today.

It's an interesting trailer. The film is being advertised as a fairytale, but the music has a slightly sinister tone to it.

It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

I saw it too. I assume this is a horror movie with mermen/mermaids, like She-Creature.

That is an assumption doomed to disappointment. Shyamalan is not just a horror/suspense director. He has a unique style that happens to fit that genre particularly well, but that doesn't mean he should be typecast as a scary movie guy. That's why The Village wasn't recieved well, people went in expecting a scary movie and got a slightly spooky love story. The Lady in the Water is exactly what it promises to be, a fairy tale. It's a story he told to his children, so I doubt it's going to be overly frightening. But, like The Village, I'm sure it will have some suspenseful parts, because that's part of his directing and writing style.

Well, I managed to find the official site, which contains the synopsis.

Based on the synopsis this film can be described as a "fairytale in the modern world".

It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

Lady In The Water

It seems M. Night Shyamalan is in process of making another movie. This one dealing with more of a fairy-tale-ish theme.

Quote:
Cleveland Heep (Paul Giamatti) has been quietly trying to disappear among the burned-out lightbulbs and broken appliances of the Cove apartment complex. But on the night that irrevocably changes his life, Cleveland finds someone else hiding in the mundane routine of the modest building – a mysterious young woman named Story (Bryce Dallas Howard), who has been living in the passageways beneath the building's swimming pool. Cleveland discovers that Story is actually a "narf" – a nymph-like character from an epic bedtime story who is being stalked by vicious creatures determined to prevent her from making the treacherous journey from our world back to hers. Story's unique powers of perception reveal the fates of Cleveland's fellow tenants, whose destinies are tied directly to her own, and they must work together to decipher a series of codes that will unlock the pathway to her freedom. But the window of opportunity for Story to return home is closing rapidly, and the tenants are putting their own lives at great risk to help her. Cleveland will have to face the demons that have followed him to the Cove – and the other tenants must seize the special powers that Story has brought out in them – if they hope to succeed in their daring and dangerous quest to save her world...and ours.
