Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

Just saw this today.

I thought it was good, there is no denying that. However, it wasn't as good as the first film.

I would say the problem lies in the fact that this film is essentially half of a story.

The ending of this film sets up the plot for the third film that's coming out next year.

Even though the final scene left me with a smile on my face (you'll see why), the movie was still anti-climatic and as such, it leaves an empty void that will not be filled for a year.

It was still enjoyable though.

i saw it opening night on midnight, and it was definatley the most packed ive ever seen a theater. (showing in 5 theaters and every single one crammed full like sardines) i enjoyed it and thought it was a great sequel, and thought it definatley outdid the first in big stunts and battle scenes, and there was more humor throughout the entire film. The ending i have mixed feelings about, i liked it but somewhat felt ripped off since it didn't come to a conclusion but it will definatley give me something to look forward to next year. (and by the way the undead monkey is back, if you don't know why pop the first one in and fastforward through the credits for a short explanation.)

I thought it was pretty lame. It felt like 2 and half hours of nothingness.

Could somebody explain to me what the hell that scene with the guy in the wig and the girl holding a gun to his head to sign and stamp something was about? Because the movie didn't do a very good job.

Why does Jack Sparrow run like that?

Every time Davy Jones came on, I wanted to yell "HAIL CTHULHU!"

The swashbuckling scene with Jack, the one guy from the first movie, and that person I don't remember at all was the most obnoxious action seen I've seen since the chase scene in Universal Soldier. When the wheel fell down in the water and the 2nd dude comes out, I was expecting him to get up and say "...why are we fighting again?"

The bar scene was also just an excuse to get people to slug it out, but at least it didn't have the crap with the girl throwing rocks and yelling and faking a faint.

Where are these lemmings going? The Super Nintendo Super Shire! Hop in line and follow them there!

I loved it, plain and simple. Davey Jones is (almost) as awesome as Barbossa, his ship was teh roxorz, and the last twenty minutes had me giddy.

Spoiler Below

It was explained in a previous scene that those documents were pardons for the crime (helping free Jack Sparrow in the first movie) that the main characters were arrested for.

I dunno why, but all of Davy Jone's pirates mutated into different marine life really tickled me. Like, Will Turner's dad kinda had the starfish thing going on, and the hammerhead shark guy....XD

I thought the movie could have been better (the opening scenes most DEFINITELY could have been written better), but I admit I was drawn in. Some of those Hollywood cliches and predictable moments had me laughing (Davy Jones playing the huge organ, haha), though.

Davy's never been my favorite; they should've gotten Micky or Mike instead. *rimshot*

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

I saw it yesterday and I liked it. I had read before that at the end of this one you would immediately want to see part 3, but I didn't expect a cliffhanger like this. I thought there would be some sneak preview, but I also thought that there would be some end to this story: that Davy Jones would be deveated and the third one would have a different bad guy.

The biggest problem I had with this one is that, because of all the new characters, subplots and action sequences, there is not that much room left for Johnny Depp to shine. He's still got many hilarious moments, though.

Even though all the villains from this movie will return in the 3rd, there is also going to be a new one played by Chow Yun-Fat.

EDIT: Also, even though he wasn't defeated per-say, I do think the main story arc with Davy Jones is over (and he will just be a secondary villain in the next one).

I think you're wrong on that one.
Spoiler Below
The documents were letters of marque and reprisal, which would make the bearer and his ship privateers for the British crown, basically legal pirates. That's why Norrington wanted them.

I wasn't too impressed. It had all the marks and scars of a "we made a sequel just to make a sequel" disease hollywood has given itself in the last 30 years. Sure, its nice that they made another one, but dropping references to the first one in every other breath is quite annoying. It didn't even grasp the charm of the first movie while trying way too hard to do so.

Ghost pirates >>>>>> fish-people.

Davy Jones sucked.
Spoiler Below
Why would he put the chest on land (which he can only touch every 10 years) when he could keep it on his boat? Makes no sense.
Overall, the fish-pirate thing was pretty contrived and half-assed.

The cliffhanger ending really made me doubt if I even want to deal with the third one. If this was like 3 or 4 steps down from the first, I shudder to think what the next one is.

6.5/10

I actually thought it was more along the lines of Back to the Future 2's "This movie exists for the sole purpose of setting up the third".

I don't think so :

Spoiler Below
.
That's why Norrington wanted them so badly. So he could get his life back.
Consequently in the next movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, he is credited as Commodore James Norrington. So it looks like he's pardoned.
