Your Experiences with Horror

I remember when I was about five or six, I walked into the living room and my dad was watching TV. The movie being shown was black and white, and it featured a young woman taking a shower. Then, the dark shape of a man brandishing a knife appears, pulls open the curtains, and SCREECH SCREECH SCREECH SCREECH! The knife went down, the girl screamed, and the blood circled the drain. That movie moment scared the piss out of me.

A year or so later, I was being babysat by my grandmother, who had turned the channel to an interesting movie. There was a girl at the prom, seemingly on top of the world, when suddenly a bucket of blood fell onto her. The doors slammed shut, the lights went red, and people began dying. I was absolutely terrified, not just by the people being killed in such interesting manners, but by the ghastly look on the girls face as she destroyed the room. Later, she went home, and after a shocking series of events, crucified her mother, another scene which left me in need of some new jeans.

If you couldn't tell, I was referring to Psycho and Carrie, respectively. I used to be sooooo afraid of scary movies, so afraid in fact that I couldn't bear to watch them. As a youth I was scared away from the Exorcist when I saw Regan spider-walk down the stairs, and I never even gave The Ring a try. I was too damn afraid of getting scared. I hated it.

But as I got a little bit older, I stumbled across an interesting film. Night of the Living Dead. It had zombies, which I had already loved thanks to the Resident Evil games, so I gave it a try. I wasn't scared much, but the movie did spark my interest in the horror movie genre.

I became brave enough to watch other scary movies. Dawn of the Dead, Hellraiser, Nightmare on Elm Street, The Fly, Jaws, and many more. I suppose I became obsessed with horror. I felt an otherworldly high whenever I was scared. Jesus, being scared is better than sex, I tell you! Now, I can't get enough of the horror movies. I've watched recent films, and I love them all. Tonight I plan on buying/renting Suspiria. Looks good.

So, tell me about all of your horrifying movie experiences.

There was this scene in The Others where a doors slams. That made my whole family jump.

Other than that... horror movies tend to bore me to tears. However, I loved The Shining.

I started watching Horror movies even before watching Cartoons. Most of these so called 'horror' movies are laughable, but the remake of "Dawn of the Dead" was quite disturbing as was the horrible remake of "The Island of Doctor Moreau," just because I loved the original so much.

Dawn of the dead=good, Sean of the Dead= HI-Larious! Horror movies now aren't scary movies anymore. all that's in them is Lots of blood and bodily mutilation. All chunks no scare.. what's up with that? but seeing Dawn of the dead first made Sean of the dead even more hilarious than it should have been. who knew?

I recommend John Carpenter's "The Thing". Probably the last legitimately good monster movie ever made. Oh yeah.

And I've always been a bit of a wuss about horror movies, it's true. After watching The Ring I couldn't sleep for a while.

^^ I've heard that The Host is a pretty good monster movie. I like what's been coming out of South Korea lately.

Then shut up.

*sigh* Why ruin the beginning of a pretty good topic with a flame war?

I'm curious what part of that exchange anyone here thought was a "flame war". It was, at its most severe, a "friendly ribbing".

I still love monster movies.

Also? I've never watched the Exorcist. I am somewhat ashamed, but the other part of me doesn't care.

I was wondering about that whole "flame war" thing myself. Could someone please explain?

The Exorcist is actually funnier than it is scary.

"Manos" The Hands of Fate is the worst horror movie ever. Actually, it's also the worst movie ever made.

What makes a scary movie scary?

I made a topic once about what makes scary stories scary, but this is about movies.

Tell me. What separates the average gorefest from a really terrifying movie?

Scary movies make you not sleep at night. They terrify you not with gore but by making things feel suspenseful and thrilling. There's something about them that makes your heart beat fast that tells you it's a scary movie. Anyone seen The Exorcism of Emily Rose?
OMGWTFSCARY
The Omen was not scary at all, and The Ring was friggin hilarious.
The Ring 2 was even funnier. The Grudge was a gorefest and it managed to scare me a bit.
I'm a wuss when it comes to horror movies, I have to say.

You thought the Exorcism of Emily Rose was good, yet the Omen and the Ring were not?

I question your taste.
