Beowulf

Apple - Trailers - Beowulf

Just like what I heard, this is those most photorealistic CGI I've ever seen (it's essentially CGI rotoscoping).

Can't wait to see it.

EDIT: I have been reading some posts elsewhere by people, who essentially want to boycott the film because it IS animated. These people are saying that it looks like a video game, that is should be live action, there is no point for it to be CGI like this. Personally, I am amazed at how well it looks and I don't care how it was filmed.

What do you think?

...This looks like distilled awesome.

John Malkovich? Anthony Hopkins? Co-written by Neil Gaiman? CGI so real it makes Final Flight of the Osiris look like a joke?

Never read the book, but this indeed looks fantastic. I may...have to read the book.

Man, that was a profound post. I feel so small in comparison to the incredible trailer I just saw.

After having seen the trailer I immediately realised why they went with this CGI look. I think it looks great.

I saw the cardboard theater setup the other night; is that girl supposed to look exactly like Lara Croft?

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

^ You mean the one played by Angelina Jolie?

It should be interesting to note that this is the second Beowulf movie in two years, the last being the (more low profile) Beowulf & Grendel staring Gerard Butler (my guess is that it would have been more high profile if it was released AFTER 300 instead of before).

The 13th Warrior was based on a book that was a retelling of Beowulf. Too bad it sucked.

This movie, however, looks freakin' sweet.

^^I didn't bother reading names; it was just the exact same pose & hairstyle as the Tomb Raider posters/box art/whatever. She's done roles where she doesn't have a huge braided ponytail.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

I found some interesting parallels between this and A Scanner Darkly:
  • Both are based on well-liked stories: The Philip K. Dick Novel and the 12th Century Epic Poem
  • Both are "more mature" films using an animation process previously used by the director: Rotoscoping previous used by Richard Linklater in Waking Life and Motion-Capture CGI previous used by Robert Zemeckis in The Polar Express
  • Both received backlash/criticism from fans for turning their beloved story into a "cartoon" (though the criticism for Beowulf is expanded to also say that the characters look like "zombies" -- don't know where that comes from)

I really don't understand what the big deal is with making it a computer animated movie instead of live action. Why do people have to act all pissy about it? Either way, I think the movie looks sweet.

Well, there's some things you can't do with simple stunt-actors, and there's a simple art-style for this movie that can't be replicated with costume design and actors.

I'll definitely be seeing THIS movie. The CGI looks like it'll be the most impressive CG-imaging this side of Advent Children. (Which was pretty good...Aside from some major stuff, such as Sephiroth and the Jenova's Witnesses' black lipstick and silver hair as well as Cloud & Reno's un-replicatable hair, they looked like they could have been actors, though you can tell it was CGI)

Because computer animated action is BORING. No matter how good the CGI is, it doesn't compare to the real thing.

I really should add a disclaimer to this post, but then I'd be moving entirely away from the topic of Beowulf.

^ That pretty much sums up Beowulf: Gollum, except with everyone.

I'd actually like to see a behind the scenes video to see how it was filmed (like if the actors were full costume or if that was just added with the CGI)

Saw it today.

Here is my very simple verdict on the film: See it in 3D or not at all.

Where can we even see it in 3D, though? IMAX?

Are there even IMAX theaters in Canada?
