Depp was good, but the person who surprised me was Helena Bonham Carter - she was brilliant as Mrs. Lovett. Sacha Baron Cohen was hysterically good as Pirelli. Rickman is the epitome of the word "villain"; that man is a god among men. Overall, a really strong cast, and an enjoyable movie (aside from the very graphic detail...)

I reeeeeaaaally want to see this, but the southern hemisphere is obviously just too far away to get movies in any close proximity of time.

I heard somewhere (after the fact) that Carter almost lost the role because the producers were so unimpressed with her vocals. I personally had no problem with it, but then again I walked into the theater without knowing it was a musical. This was a pleasant surprise for me (unlike Pan's Labyrinth, where I didn't expect a Spanish language film and the entire experience was wasted on me as such, but no matter). She was quite good, but Depp is certainly the star as is the case in most of these types of roles.

Even though the film is not lacking in blood, it's not along the lines of Combat Zone Wrestling or anything. All the violence just screamed "Tim Burton was here!" throughout the film, which took away some of the edge of it all. Not only that, but the underworld of London that Burton illustrates for viewers is a real treat IMO. Great flick. Don't be scared away because it's a musical, the movie works quite well and is in no way "compromised" so to speak by its musical inclinations.

I don't know about the validity in that - she auditioned and received approval from Stephen Sondheim himself... and I personally was quite impressed with her, despite only having trained for three months before shooting. Plus, her voice blended and harmonized beautifully with Depp's.

You're probably right then, my source on all this is someone I passed while walking out of the theatre. Not up to MLA standards to say the least.

I lack a critical ear for music, but the two of them sounded quite good together. I think she did a wonderful job with the role.

As an aside, did anyone find it interesting that three actors from this film also play Death Eaters in the Harry Potter films? Nothing to read into it, I just thought it was a funny little coincidence - especially with Timothy Spall playing assistant to Alan Rickman as he (presumably) will be doing in the sixth Potter film. Weird how it worked out like that.

I enjoyed the movie itself despite not being too keen on musicals. I did find myself silently saying "please don't sing what you want to say, please don't sing what you want to say.....DOH !!!" near the end of the movie.

I did however like the Shakespearian theme of death that mirrored the ending of Hamlet.

I've never known Tim Burton to have much violence in his movies. I'm pretty sure I've seen everything he's done except Sleepy Hollow.
