'Saw' director James Wan to co-write and direct Castlevania movie

BD Horror News - SDCC '09: James Wan to Write and Direct 'Castlevania'!

Quote:
Bloody-Disgusting can exclusively announce here that James Wan, the co-mastermind behind the Saw franchise, and director of Dead Silence and Death Sentence, will be co-writing and directing Castlevania! Inside you'll find a tid-bit from Wan about his forthcoming adaptation. Sylvain White was originally slated to direct. Castlevania is an adaptation of the popular NES game from the 80's that has since become a massive video game franchise.

"I'm very fresh on this project, so its early stages and I'm still trying to work things out, but the producers love my vision for it," James Wan tells Bloody-Disgusting in an exclusive chat. "I'll be working on the script with a writer to give it a new spin, different to the previous versions. This will have my stamp on it which Konami is very excited about.

"The thing I love about what Konami did with Castlevania, was taking the iconic Dracula mythology and Eastern-European setting, and retelling it with a Japanese pop-cultural sensibility," he continues. "That’s the East-meets-West tone I want to visually expand on for the film. I’m thrilled by the opportunity to make a highly stylized, fantasy, action film that focuses on the gothic storyline and the cool, anime-like characters. For once, the human hero is as sexy and dangerous as the vampire villain, and his weapon of choice was what attracted me to the project in the first place – The Vampire Killer Whip.”
For those of you who don't know, the Castlevania film's been in development hell for a little while now, but it looks like producers are picking it back up. It looks interesting so far. Also, tight-ass promo poster:

In other game-to-movie adaptations, Sam Raimi is going to direct the World of Warcraft movie.

Yes, Spider-Man/Evil Dead Sam Raimi. So maybe it won't suck.

^ Yeah, but that seemed to have "bad production values" written all over it. I don't think that was Raimi's doing.

So, I just realized... if this film is directed by James Wan, is there going to be some weird, stupid twist at the end of the film that leaves it open for a sequel?

Like, Belmont thinks he kills Dracula, but Dracula was actually the corpse impaled on a pole outside the castle through the whole film?

Spider-Man 3 was a corny, ill-conceived mess. No matter how much outside interference there was, the director has to take a large share of responsibility for that.

I actually think that they did a very good job with Sandman though, probably the most interesting version of him I've seen.

As far as Castlevania goes, I hope its good.
I'm a pretty big fan of the series, considering I've only played part of one of the games as a ROM.
I haven't seen any SAW films past 1 and 2, so I can't really give any input on that...

so he made a movie that sucked, that doesn't mean he's not a respectable director who's made good movies in the past.

Simple. With his last breath, Dracula curses Belmont. The hunter goes to visit his family's resting ground, where he is visited by a young girl who says she can help him.

Part of the outside interference was shoehorning an extra villain (Venom) into the plot, which is really what made it a mess; the movie had 4 plots, whereas one fewer villain would've removed 2 of them.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

True, Venom probably shouldn't have been in there, but once the producers forced Raimi to include him, he should have at least tried to make the best of it. Instead he cast Topher Grace as Venom, put him in one fight scene, and had him unmasked just about the whole time. Raimi didn't have the right to take out his frustration on a movie that meant so much to so many people. Such behavior is extremely selfish and immature.

Considering Spidey had the symbiote for most of the film, I don't see how you can do much else with Venom without creating another movie.

Also, sheesh, you make it seem like he ruined someone's marriage, no offense.

Funny you should use that particular example, considering what atrocities have been inflicted upon Spider-Man in the comic books recently. Indeed Sam Raimi's sins are small compared to those of Marvel Editor-In-Chief Joe Quesada and his blasphemous flunkies.

So...did Simon kill Alucard and take his sword?

But wait...Alucard uses a Rapier.

Why the hell does Simon have a Katana?

Unless that's supposed to be Jonathan...in which case I wouldn't be surprised considering all the various crap he's been known to kill the un-dead with.

The director's not responsible for casting, script, budget, acting, or editing. He's just a coordinator. Hence, I blame production.
