The topic for unnecessary sequels and remakes

What with Hollywood's current modus operandi of whoring itself cheaply to any franchise that ever made a buck at the box office, this thread can serve as the "watchdog" for all the completely unnecessary and misguided retreads that are being greenlit for production even as we speak. I've got two real winners to start us off:

Midnight Run 2 (why, De Niro, why?????) and a totally pointless, probably PG-13 rated remake of Police Academy.

There's this thing I like to call "Horror Movie Sequel Syndrome" in which sequels to a movie keep getting released to a movie, which continually get stupider and make less and less sense. Look at Friday the 13th. The first movie was about a chick avenging the death of her son by killing campers. Normal slasher film. The sequel was about her son somehow surviving his death as a child and killing campers. The next film, he's a zombie who keeps coming back to life. Eventually, we have Jason X, which features Jason killing people aboard a space station in the year 2455. This seems to happen with a lot of horror movies, as well as others.

By the way, did you know a seventh Saw film is coming out this year?

Because of the economy Hollywood is actually pretty much refusing to green-light anything that isn't a sequel, remake, or adaptation right now. I'll see if I can find the article...

Here's a tidbit about Dreamworks landing a director for their planned remake of Fright Night.

As much as I loved the "Pink Panther" movies, they really should've quit after the death of Peter Sellers. "The Pink Panther Strikes Again" was pretty out there and "Revenge of the Pink Panther" is probably the weakest of that point, but they're still funny. The first one after Sellers' death, "Curse of...", bordered on disrespect for the dead. (although "Son of..." was good).

The ones with Steve Martin aren't as horrible as some say, but they're far from classics.

Well, after The Pink Panther 2 bombed so spectacularly, we probably won't have to endure a third.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

And yeah, they're still trying desperately to whore the Predator franchise.

The most pointless remake idea of them all was the idea to remake Bong Joon-Ho's brilliant film The Host. The original was an extremely intelligent, multi-layered black satire of both the South Korean and American governments. I'm pretty sure the American remake will be... just some monster movie. The only appealing thing from the original that I see them keeping would be the family.

Thankfully, it appears to be stuck in development hell.

Will it be called Final Destination 5?

or The Final Destination 2?

Or maybe A/Our/My/Life's/Nintendo Presents Final Destination?

The possibilities are ENDLESS

Isn't there plans for a Saw V?

Also, I thought I heard a rumor from a guy that there were going to be 3 more installments to the National Treasure series but that sounds too farfetched for me.

Wow! Hollywood is certainly handing us a lot of fodder for this topic. Here's a trio of unnecessary "fourquels" for you:

Spy Kids 4

Scream 4

Austin Powers 4

A) Both of the Spy Kids are too old to do another one of those movies.

B) Scream 4? Really? No one's gonna see it.

C) Austin 4 was announced almost immediately after Goldmember; that one's no surprise.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

A. They'll probably just recast, the way they did with Home Alone 3.

B. No one'll see it, but that sure doesn't stop Hollywood from trying.

C. A fourth Austin Powers movie has been rumored for ten years, but this is the first time there's been some actual, concrete information about it. Up until now, it's been about as believable as that stupid Vega Brothers movie everyone thinks Quentin Tarantino is making.
