I've listened to Operation Ivy for like 2 or 3 years now... and I love the flash game Punk-O-Matic... but that's as far as I've dove into it. So... reccomend me the good stuff.

Well, there's the classics, of course--The Clash, Sex Pistols, the Ramones. I also like Anti-Flag and Misfits, personally (some don't), and Fishbone is class (although most people would put it closer to 'ska' than to pure punk).

Well, if you don't listen to the Clash, then you're not listening to anything. But check out The Living End and Flogging Molly.

What's that supposed to mean? There's nothing wrong with those bands, that's just what I'm not in the mood for or am requesting right now.

Most stores have a policy of no returning the cd if it's opened.

Dammit, where's Jesse when you need him?

Punk, eh? Rancid, if you haven't heard 'em (kids these days..), the Unseen, the Pinkerton Thugs, and Funeral Oration are my cup 'o tea in the punk world. Haven't been into that stuff for something like 4 years, though. A shame really, I just got phased out of the scene.

I've heard Flogging Molly, they were ok. And Reel Big Fish is ska-core, which is the majority of what I listen to (ska, that is).

And I've listened to some Rancid and it was ok, I remember some horns in some of their songs though.

I like that Rancid song they play on the radio.

Never heard of Unseen, the Pinkerton Thugs, and Funeral Oration, I'll check em out.

Thanks

Punk: The Clash, The Sex Pistols, Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros, The Undertones, The Offspring, Green Day, Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, NoFX (I don't really like them, but everyone else seems to), Leftover Crack, Millencolin, Goldfinger.

Ska: Voodoo Glow Skulls, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones (ska-core), Rancid, Less Than Jake, Mad Caddies, Choking Victim, Catch 22 (only "Keasby Nights" album), Streetlight Manifesto, Rx Bandits, Reel Big Fish, The Pietasters, Suicide Machines, Sublime.

That should cover it for now. The ones that I highly recommend are Sublime, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Mad Caddies, Reel Big Fish, Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, Catch 22 and Streetlight Manifesto (practically the same band), The Offspring, and especially Rancid, who are the closest thing you'll find to Operation Ivy (while still keeping their own style).

EDIT: Reel Big Fish is neither punk nor ska-core. And if you want some ska recommendations, I'm a ska geek .

Pointless fact of the week:
The word “trivia” comes from the Latin "tri-" + "via", which means three streets. This is because in ancient times, at an intersection of three streets in Rome, they would have a type of kiosk where ancillary information was listed. You might be interested in it, you might not, so they were bits of “trivia."

^ No, I'm the ska geek. You're preaching to the pastor. I think we've talked to each other about ska in one of those "What are you listening to?" topics.

Listening to ska 3+ years now. Wow! Someone else that has heard of Streetlight Manifesto! Next to Keasbey Nights, Everything Goes Numb has to be my favorite cd of all time, it is simply amazing, Tomas Kalonky is a friggin genius.

I would consider RBF closer to ska than punk or rock.

And did you just list the Offspring under ska...?

Some great bands you did not mention: The Hippos, the Brownies, No Doubt (self titled and the Beacon Street Collection only), Witches (Korean ska) and Mustard Plug.

Have you ever seen ska live? I had a chance to see Catch 22 in Cincinnati but I felt that I would've been setting myself up for dissapointment since it was just after they released the craptacular "Dinosaur Sounds" and Tomas and 2 of the other guys had all left and were working on their SM cd. Seeing SM live would be the most amazing thing ever, too bad they only seem to tour New Jersey.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
About what was reccomended me:
I liked: Funeral Oration. This is really, really good stuff, I think I'm going to actually try and hunt down a copy of "Discography" and buy it.
Didn't like: Unseen, Leftover Crack, Undertones.
The first two seemed from what I heard mostly unaudible screaming all the way through the songs, reminding me of Slipknot... *shudders*.
And the Undertones... eh... not my bag o' tea.
A lot of people wouldn't consider Joe Strummer and the Mescaleroes to be punk, even though its Joe Strummer. But There's more to punk rock than most people think. Its about musical revolution. Right now, people think New Found Glory and Story of the Year are the new punk, but even though their style is similar to the Ramones, I don't consider it punk at all, because its just a re-hash of everything that's been done before(Its also nowhere near as good as the Ramones). I place it under the category of Wuss-rock. But anyway, Joe Strummer and the Mescaleroes is different, it goes against convention and doesn't conform to the status quo. That qualifies it as punk in my book.
You'd be surprised at how many critics used to say Alternative Rock was just Punk with a different name.
I do believe I talked to you about ska before, but that was a looong time ago. You were the first one to recommend Catch 22 to me, even though I didn't get into them much at the time (sometimes it takes me a while to get used to bands, but I can grow to love the hell out of them). You haven't been around for a while, though. What brought you back?
Yeah, I don't like Leftover Crack at all either, but since they're punk and that's what you were asking for, I put it down. I hate that type of music, though.
I've seen Reel Big Fish (opened up by Goldfinger) and Less Than Jake (opened by Yellowcard, who I don't like that much but were quite good) live. Both my two favorite concerts thus far, and this is pitted against The Offspring, Foo Fighters, and Jane's Addiction. I managed to get at the very front at the Reel Big Fish concert, which made it ten times better. It's too damn bad LTJ ditched The Pietasters, who they've toured with before. Pietasters rule. Oh, and TYLER POINTED AT ME !
Tom Kalnoky is one of my idols (along with Aaron and Dicky Barrett). And yeah, I've heard that post-Keasby Nights Catch 22 sucks live. I still have neither "Keasby Nights" nor "Everything Goes Numb," but I have about 4 downloaded songs from each (don't wanna download the whole album cause then no songs will come as a surprise when I buy it) and I'm meaning to get them as soon as I have money. You should watch out for SM this summer, though. Look on their website, they're gonna be touring the States and a bit of Canada, and, what's more, Big D's gonna be supporting them for a large part of it. That's gonna be an amazing show if you can catch it.
Anyway, you should really check out Mad Caddies and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones if you haven't yet. Those are also great bands.
Eh.. I came to back to VGF.. out of boredom I guess.
Damn, you got see Yellowcard? I love them, the only poppish-emo band I like. And how recent was this Less Than Jake concert? Didn't they get rid of their horns completely when they released Anthem? I saw them in a MTV music video with a song from Anthem and it had 0 horns in it, nor anything that sounded like the LTJ from the past.
Put Keasbey Nights and Everything Goes Numb at the top of your to buy list. You absolutely have to get these. When you first listen to Everything Goes Numb it feels kind of dull because there are only a few tracks that start out fast, but once you listen more and just let the CD run you discover so many "spots" in the CD where they seem like entirely different songs, like a complete tempo/style change or an absolutely sweet verse that you can't stop singing for weeks to come. (We are the few that won't say nothin right, we are the footsteps fading into the night..."). but yeah, buy it.
I own a Mad Caddies CD, the one with the pilots on the cover. It's not a bad CD, I didn't hear anything special in it though, although I haven't really listened to it enough to give it a completely fair judgement. The song "Monkeys" kinda scares me. "The Gentleman" is my favorite song on their though.
I've been meaning tp look into the Bosstones, just been kinda lazy. Which albums do you reccomend?
