They were also sort of a way of 'trying an artist out' a little while out. There was no Napster, so you could buy the Song you like plus maybe a few others from the full album on a single. The record industry is really losing money on the web moreover because people don't have to buy something they don't like. That's how cd sales managed to spike so high this time around the cycle..
