The best song my group ever created sampled the very first chord of "Let's Stay Together" by Al Green. However, it was sent in to be copywritten before the courts made this new finding, so that might change something.

I think it's silly. I could just as easily try to make that chord myself, but it wouldn't be as grimey sounding as I had it. I hope somebody gets this decision turned over really quickly.

Well, at least it'll encourage some originality. Personally, I think it's better to write your own damn music. That way, you don't have this kind of problem, and you get more respect out of it.

Sampling is an art form in it's own right. You need to understand, the legal limit for a sample to be used freely was previously reduced to 3 seconds in length. They do not take into account that much electronica samples movies and tv shows and the like, and that this will be very detrimental to that industry. 3 seconds was pathetic enough.

Actually, the law would not change Nelly sampling "Back in Black." That was a full on sample, not a sample of soundbytes, in which case he would've needed permission anyways.
