Are you kidding me? How can a group that has only been around for a few years be the best of all time? I really doubt that people will still be listening to them in 30 years time.

I think there's only one possible answer to this question: The Beatles. They revolutionised the music industry with their recording techniques and brilliant songwriting. Queen is my personal favourite band, but even they know they owe much to the Beatles.

People might still know Metallica 30 years down the road.

Well, Bob Dylan is the most amazing songwriter, as far as I'm concerned, but my personal favorite would probably be Tool (albeit Tool is a band, as opposed to a solitary music artist).

I think Elvis was more a superstar than a musician. Like you have movie stars (e.g. Tom Cruise) and good actors (e.g. Steve Buscemi). Sometimes you can have both as well (e.g. Brad Pitt). Elvis was a great singer, and one of the most influential in music, but not as much as the Beatles in my opinion. Did he even write his own songs?

As for Johnny Cash, I don't know much about him. I don't think his legacy is as lively in Europa as it is in the US. He's definitely not part of the public consciousness like Elvis or the Beatles. I think Walk The Line changed that a litte, but not much.

If she wasn't already married, I'd probably say Shakira.

And remember, "I'm-a literalism, number one!"

Thumbs down

Shakira has been around for a while but, I don't think she's the best artist to date...

... and what happened to Luigi being number one???

On the contrary, Shakira would be excellent to date, but she's already married.
Now I want you to go look up the word 'literal'.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Hmm.... Although a lot of my choices have already been mentioned (well, OK, one) I'd have to throw The Smiths into the mix. Maybe not the best, but they had a lot of influence on modern indie.

....

And 'Panic' rocks, yes. That too.

fall out boy is possibly the most influential and most covered band of all time. they revolutionized the way we view music lyrically and musically. they also sang that one song "yellow submarine"

eagles are a generic soft rock band with one even remotely mediocre song and tons of fillers including the entire "quadrophenia" album

I think Led Zeppelin deserves a nomination.
