I thought it was time to feature a contemporary non-rock artist for a change, and Daft Punk are one of my favourites. Two song from their first album were big hits over here: Da Funk and Around The World, which I both really liked. I remember thinking of getting their album, but never got around to it.

Then I didn't hear about them for a long time until they returned with One More Time, a great song with an iconic video. At that time I didn't realise it was part of a longer movie and that all songs from their second album would've videos like this. Aerodynamic and Digital Love soon followed, which I also really liked so I decided to get the album, which I instantly loved. One of my favourite songs on it Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger turned out to be their next single and quite a big hit. Some other favourites from the Discovery album include Superheroes, Veridis Quo and Short Circuit, which sound like it's made with a really old music programme (anyone here ever used Scream Tracker 3? Then you'll know what I mean).

When I first heard this band was when I was about 9 to 10 years old, when I first saw their video, One more time. Currently, I like to listen to them occasionally when I'm not listening to Metal or J-Rock.

Don't knock trackers, they're very efficient.

Daft Punk's pretty funky on occasion, but nothing I really care to spend time on.

I spend a lot of time with Scream Tracker 3, but the quality and number of sounds was pretty low. In the song I mentioned they make use of some typical Scream Tracker sounds, and they also use the same snare drum and bass drum sounds, but in different 'notes', which I have never heard before in a dance song.

^You mean like real drums? Because the main reason I don't give club music the time of day is that the (very prominent) drum synths sound like excrement. I might check these guys out if they use real drum tracks.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Keep in mind that the purpose of using drum machines isn't to emulate real drums, they just sound cool.

then get a tracker that can actually sample. I recommend Modplug.

They're definitely not real drums in the song I meant, CH. I'm not sure if they use real drums on any track, but I don't think so.

I don't mind drum machines if they work for the song, although I do prefer real drums. Even Queen used drum machines quite frequently during the 80s (Radio Ga Ga is a prime example).

It was many years ago that I last used ST3. I haven't used any programme since, I just lost interest in it.

Well, They Might Be Giants also used a drum machine for their first 9 or 10 years, but their emphasis was more on melody and lyrics instead of beat, as was Queen's.

Except when they sound like utter Sunni.

I think you'll find that Daft Punk's music is also quite melodic at times.
