| Vibrates On Command | AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE OI OI OI So I figured, Aussie bands don't get enough worldwide exposure, and they kick a lot of arse. Therefore, I'm going to list some of my favourite Aussie bands. I'll link to free legal MP3s and official websites where possible too. Dance: Pendulum Although they're now based in the UK a lot, Pendulum is one of Australia's best dance acts, specialising in drum'n'bass. EPIC drum'n'bass. Words cannot describe how big their sound is. 'Slam' in particular is bound to test the bass limits of your subwoofer. 'Tarantula' is also very bass-heavy, sorta like evil reggae dance rock. Unfortunately, the free MP3 they have available is pretty much the lightest song on Hold Your Colour, but is still pretty decent. http://music.download.com/pendulum/3...100731189.html www.planetpendulum.com The Presets Oh, HELL YES. Sleazy, dirty electro rock. The current album 'Beams' is full of dance and electric rock about one-night stands, clubbing, lust, stepping out, and the joys of driving to your girlfriend's house and going down on her. Highly recommended. Girl and the Sea (Cut Copy Mix) (heard on The OC): http://www.3hive.com/2006/01/the_presets.php Are You The One?: http://music.download.com/thepresets...100822288.html www.thepresets.com Samplicous: The Avalanches OK, so this is rather old. Still good, though. DJ Dexter and crew take you through a sonic journey of weird samples and downtempo relaxation. Apart from the (mostly) self-contained 'Frontier Psychiatrist', the whole album is essentially the one meandering track, with track numbers only provided to skip ahead easily. http://www.theavalanches.com/launch.html Gotye Pronounced "gore-tea-yay", this guy is a Melbourne man who treats op-shops as a fishing ground, and the old tapes there are his snapper and bream. He's also really, really good at making music from his samples. "Heart's A Mess" is the pinnacle of his songs, a track with emotional resonance and a style that transcends the repetitive lyrics. He does jazzy ("Learnangivealittlelovin"), insane trips ("A Distinctive Sound") and so much more. http://www.myspace.com/gotye http://www.gotye.com/ http://www.3hive.com/2005/11/gotye.php Rock: The Butterfly Effect My personal favourite Aussie rock band. They're melodic and heavy, although their focus has shifted more to the melody on their latest album. They sing about love and desire, rape, childhood abuse, and obsession. They were on top of the alternative charts here for 50 weeks straight. The myspace page has downloads, the official site no longer has MP3s (but has samples of every one of their songs). If you look up one band on this list, make it this one. www.thebutterflyeffect.com.au www.myspace.com/thebutterflyeffectau Cog Sorta like the inverse of the Butterfly Effect. A lot of focus on the heavy with a tinge of melody to smooth it over. Good stuff. Free download if you subscribe to their mailing list. http://www.cog.com.au/ End Of Fashion Light rock, absolutely infectious. 'Oh Yeah' is their biggest single, and I challenge you to listen for a second time and not sing along. Oh, and my two sisters say that the lead singer is really really hot. So hot that they've devised an elaborate plan to eliminate his singer girlfriend, kidnap him, brainwash him - and there their plan peters out, as I'm not sure whether they're willing to share with each other. We'll see ![]() http://www.endoffashion.com/ http://www.myspace.com/endoffashion Wolfmother Apparently they sound like every band that ever existed from the 70s to the late 80s. I don't know, I wasn't there. What I do know is that Wolfmother produce epic oldschool rock, with big keyboards and long solos. They also kick arse, and are signed to Modular, which means they MUST be cool. http://www.wolfmother.com/2005.html The Living End Wikipedia calls them 'punkabilly'. Now, I don't know what the hell that means, so if you do, good. They dominate the charts here whenever they release a new album, and specialise in energetic rock with a bit of 'twang' to it. They also have made the best method for resolving industrial disputes too - a pinball game between the heads of both camps XD http://www.thelivingend.com.au/ Hip-Hop: TZU Light-hearted Aussie hip-hop with a focus on girls. What I mean is that every song is about them - impressing them, wooing them, being annoyed at them. (Save for the deathly 'Recoil', however - a caustic reworking of the Australian national anthem that lets through exactly how the crew feels about the current situation here.) Very fun to listen to. 'In Front Of Me' is a highlight. (MP3s are on the site under 'Beats'.) http://www.tzu.com.au/ [b]Hilltop Hoods[b] By far Australia's best and biggest-selling hip-hop act. Their songs are filled with humor, and although they don't deviate much from the 'we're cool MCs, here's our lifestyle' formula, they put so much style into it that you can't help but bop along. Their website has MP3 downloads from all their albums. "We infect the mikes like/Tommy to Pamela" "I'll make origami of your lyrics" "Yeah that's good Suffa ... what is it?" ... "IT'S A SWAN!!!!" www.hilltophoods.com.au The Herd A highly political Aussie hip-hop act. They're very very good, but since the politics is mostly Australian some of the jokes won't make much sense to you people. Butterfingers Hooo boy. Hard to categorise sometimes, but this is probably the best place for them. Extremely explicit, hilarious hip-hop/punk music, with songs such as "Ya Mama('s on top of my things-to-do list)" and "FIGJAM" (F*** I'm Good, Just Ask Me), they certainly earn the warning sticker. Highly recommended if you want a laugh. www.butterfingers.info As an aside, keep a watch on www.triplej.net.au/listen There's a stack of ever-changing Aussie free MP3s there. Very good to keep your finger on the pulse. I may edit this list later, but I'm sure HotD or SD will have something to add before then. ![]() Happy listening. (Seriously, check out the Butterfly Effect. You won't regret it.) __________________ Why is it drug addicts and computer afficionados are both called users? -Clifford Stoll |

I haven't heard of any of the bands you listed, but I think that was your point when posting this topic anyway. |

What can I say, other than I end up listening to music that no one here has ever heard of more than "our" stuff. That being said, I appreciate a good Aussie band and if it weren't the end of my day and all, I might be able to think of some songs to mention. |
