| All I Ever Wanted Was To Pick Apart the Day & Put the Pieces Back Together My Way | Songs you wish you could've done music videos for... I don't know about you guys, but when I hear music, different sounds make me imagine different colors. For example, drums are usually black, white and grey, horns are often brassy colored, an acoustic guitar will resonate with yellows and browns, violins will be purple, etc. Often times I create music videos in my head while listening to music that usually contain the colors I "hear." Mobb Deep - "Shook Ones pt. 2" There was already a video for this song, but my version would've been darker, taking place at night, lots of streetlights, mast moving cars, maybe a chase scene involving the police. Lots of reds and yellows, too. Ice Cube - "Alive on Arrival" Ice Cube's songs are so easy to envision music videos for because he's very visual with his lyrics. The premise of this video would be a simple re-telling of the story in the lyrics in black & white. Nappy Roots - "These Walls" Nappy Roots performing in a small room, wit lots of reds and oranges juxtaposed to with light brown dirt on the ground and some greenish-blue surrounding areas, with footage of the civil rights movement of the 1960's spliced in. UGK - "One Day" Early morning in Houston, Texas, with the sun rising. N.O. Joe on the street hustling, Bun B at a dice game, Pimp C in a car with an AK-47 getting ready to start some s***. Masta Killa - "Masta Killa" A parade in China, with dragon dancing and confetti and lots of assorted colors, with red being the most dominant color among the decorations. Cutaway shots of Masta Killa - dressed as a monk - rapping in the Chinese countryside by a large red flag, with lots of wind blowing everything along. Nas - The Lost Tapes (the whole album) Common - Be (the whole album) Both of these albums are generally short (by hip hop standards, anyways) and could easily be made into musical shortfilms. For Nas, a snowy winter day in New York that hits night around "Drunk By Myself," with "Black Zombies" beginning the next morning. For Common, a day in Chicago, already using the videos already shot but with more videos for the rest of the songs. As you can see... I could probably go on for days... |
