I need semi-obscure 90's music

Actually, it doesn't have to be obscure at all, just songs that:

A. Work well within the context of an art movie
B. Invoke nostalgia for Generations X and Y
C. Are from the 1990's

I'm trying to embrace the many different facets of 1990's music.

Songs I'm alread using:

OutKast - Elevators
The Roots - Hypnotic
Cappadonna - Supa Ninjaz
Cibo Matto - Beef Jerky
The Lightning Seeds - You Showed Me (cover of an old 60's song but whatever)
Radiohead - Paranoid Android
Splendora - You're Standing on my Neck (aka theme from Daria)
The Cardigans - Lovefool
Stereolab - Percolater

Songs I've considered but will probably not use if I find something better:

Smif-N-Wessun - Bucktown
Dr. Octagon - Blue Flowers
Meredith Brooks - What Would Happen
Fiona Apple - The First Taste
Blur - Coffee & TV
Supergrass - Caught by the Fuzz
Duncan Shiek - Barely Breathing

Hmm... I don't have any of those songs, nor do I know much about music.

How about the theme songs to one of any number of cartoon/TV shows? I can think of C.O.P.S. and Captain Planet offhand. 'Course, there's also video game music.

ATLiens and Southernplayamistikcaddillacmuzik.

Come on, that's like, stereotypical 90s beat.

Oh, try Robin S.- All That I've Got....although that's more disco.

New Radicals and Polaris both immediately spring to mind. Also, TMBG's 3rd-7th albums were 90s material, and a little Hootie or BNL never hurts.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

That may be too 70s though, I don't know why I'm feeling a 90s vibe from this.

"Right Here, Right Now" by Jesus Jones is the theme song of the '90s.

I was trying to find some obscure grunge that didn't suck. Nirvana or Pearl Jam would be too obvious, and neither of them would really work. The main problem with grunge is that this movie is intended to be a bit more upbeat (but not a pure-comedy) in tone, and since 99% of grunge is depressing, it's a difficult find. Of course, I did include "Paranoid Android," which isn't exactly the happiest song ever written.

I'll check out some New Radicals and Polaris.

As far as rap goes, I've already got three songs, and since I'm trying to keep the entire list around 13 songs, I don't want to spend too much time on it. If I could find a good G-Funk song that doesn't sound too lazy.

Keep in mind that I'm only about 1/4 of the way through with the script, and by the time I'm actually finished there may have been some dramatic changes. Any and all suggestions would help. (Hell, I even went through Pitchfork Media's Top 100 Albums of the 90's for help).

But definitely not "Right Here, Right Now."

Ah, yeah, that would rule most grunge out. Pretty hard to find an Alice in Chains song that doesn't have that blues-sludge sound. Maybe some early Stone Temple Pilots. Temple of the Dog might work too. Corduroy by Pearl Jam might work depending on when and how it's used. Try some early Oasis too.

Isn't Polaris on DDR? Though, many of those songs share the same name, so I don't know.

I was born in 81 so don't kill me for naming some really weak and saucy music that came out in the 90's.

Okay bullet number 1

New Kids on the Block - Step by Step

Sinead O'connors - Nothing compares 2 u

Digital Undergrounds - The Humpty Dance (love ancient 2pac)

Mc Hammer - Can't touch this

Vanilla Ice- Ice Ice baby

Bell biv devoe's - Poison ( starts singing the words to this damn catchy song)

Not reall a song but it captures the 90's perfectly - the theme to Fresh Prince of Bel Air

The spanish/english rap song of Rap artist Gerardo - Rico Suave

Metallica's - Enter Sandman

(by the way if your wondering how I'm getting all these, all I had to do was bust open my old suitcase full of outdated cassetts)

C&C music - "Gonna Make you sweat" ( Everybody Dance NOW)

Public Enemy & Anthrax - Bring da Noise

Sir Mixalot - Baby Got Back

Kriss Kross - Jump Jump

Shaggy - Mr. Bombastic

and of course the Anthem of all the people during the 90's

Montell Jordan's - THIS IS HOW WE DO IT !!

Hope this helps I have a whole lot more suggestions if you need it.

Amazingly, Joker, I've heard of all of those songs. I just might consider "The Humpty Dance"... or maybe it would be a bit too silly.

Thanks for the STP suggestion, Lurch. I think "Interstate Love Song" would probably fit perfectly.

Oh, look who's tough, breaking out the VH1 card.

I think of that song when I think of bad 90's music (Which, if you remember, was almost as plentiful as bad music today.). Give me a break, man.

Couldn't be, I"m in a new music drought, I ahven't bothered to listen to the radio for a good two years. And to top it off, I keep a list of current songs I like on my computer, (a list that usually has in the neighborhood of 25-30 songs) and there's only 13 songs on it.

Dude, you weren't even out of middle school by the time the decade ended. WTF do you know about it? Music today is by far much worse than anything that hit in the 1990s, and that encompasses all spectrums, be it radio pop station rotation hits or stuff in "OMG TEH SCEAN." There's a very damn good reason why every "Modern" rock station in the country still has tracks out of the early 1990s playing in heavy rotation. The 1990s for rock was the same as the 1970s: Better than the crap that preceded it and followed it for 10 years. At least. Anything in the 80s? Post disco, post punk crap. Anything from roughly 1999 onward? Garbage. Too much blending sounds, too much girlpants.

And that doesn't even get into rap/hip hop. Yeah, laugh at Hammer and Will Smith all you want. NWA still kicks the piss out of anything in that scene. As does Ice T and Body Count (hell, that kicks the snot out of any nu-metal rap/rock or rapcore/tardcore/emocore/whatever the crap they're labeling themselves this year). Tupac. WuTang. West Coast/East Coast. Stuff coming out of New Orleans from Cash Money and No Limit before they got put on pop rotations.

You want to talk about bad music? Yeah, the 90s had boybands, it had that lame post-80s synth pop, and it had Marky Mark before he figured out he could act. But it's still better than the bullcrap they attempt to pass off as music. Crap today is good stuff from the past thirty years put into a blender in an attempt to mix sounds that ultimately shouldn't be mixed. And they wear girl pants.

So no, you don't get a break. I hate you. Die.

Edit to Bomby: Sorry if this hyjacks the topic. It had to be said.

So much can be added to that list, OutKast, Goodie mob, UGK, but yeah, that's pretty much agreed. I don't care what anyone says, Wayne back then was better than he is now.

BAD 90's music. As in awful music that I remember hearing in various media growing up. To me, it encompasses bad music as a whole. If it doesn't for you, whatever, I'm not going to tell you to die sooner.

Let me reiterate, because I know you'll conveniently overlook it: I remember hearing it before I was even in middle school.

Quit having your little trips, man, because I'm just going to wind up repeating myself after a while.
