(Clean) Versions

Does it ever bother anyone when they take a favourite song of yours and edit out swearwords, both rationally and irrationally?

I'm just curious to know how other people think. (hope this hasn't been asked before...)

No, I don't see why songs need to be laced with such heavy cursing in the first place.

Of course, I don't actually listen to much music, or at least music in English, so I suppose my opinion is irrelevant.

But I'd like to see how other people think. I mean, if a young child who's impressionable listens to a song with heavy cursing, they'd be likely to repeat said words. They do it anyway, but I think it would just be for the best if they were listening to a song, it shouldn't have heavy cursing.

Pretty much any censorship annoys me.

I'm a rebel during Rock Band because I hate censorship. Yeah, that's right. I say "so ****ing special" instead of "so very special." I'm so hardcore.

^Isn't it "very" and "****ing" in different bits of the song?

It's ironic, I grabbed what was said to be an edited version of Appetite for Destruction, and here I got all the songs with the F Bombs and such. That means I didn't need to show ID for songs that usually require ID.

It can be, if you're a station that is going to have little kids potentially listen, then yeah, you need to be censored.

However, our radio station is internet radio, you have to GO to the station online to here it, I don't think we should have to follow FCC guidelines (which are pretty stupid btw).

I'm against censorship on any media that can be blocked by parental figures, such as music, video games, the internet, etc., as the necessary precautions have been taken by the industry (Such as the "Explicit Content" label on music, the rating on games, and parental control tools) to provide parents with the ability to stop their children from accessing them if they think they should not. However, if the parents feel that their child can access the content, they should be able to unrestricted.

Triple J warns about songs that have swearing, but the prerecorded warnings often have swearing in them

I actually love the edited version of Lil' Jon's "Get Low" and loathe the album version. For some reason I connect more with "skeet skeet skeet skeet skeet skeet" than "skeet skeet mutha****aaaa."

Eamon is a horrible artist, but the censored version of "Don't Want You Back" is hilarious.

Other than that, though, my basic thought is that if you're that desperate to get a song on the radio, try writing one that doesn't have anything to be bleeped in the first place. I also hate shortening songs without offensive content just to make give them a "radio-friendly" run time.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

YES!! That is so annoying! Why bother playing the song if you can't air the whole thing? I wish I can be more angry about this, but you hit the spot dead on that.

As far as censorship, yeah it's annoying in my book. When you hear the censored part, sometimes you're just like "G'uh?!" followed by a "Oooooh yeah.. riiiiiiight," throwing you off tempo. But I guess I can't complain since I can just buy the CDs for the songs anyway if I'm that concerned about the censorship.

@ Bomby:
Same deal, that goes for many songs, Sensual Seduction is one, it just seems that if you hear one version of a song one way, when you finally hear the other version, it seems crazy.

I remember radio stations here complaining about having to play Evie in its fifteen-minute-long glory (even though they sometimes split it up into its component parts).

Bah. I've played "Alice's Restaurant" (18 min, though Arlo claims it's 25) several times on the air, uninterrupted. Heck, I've played Weird Al's "Peter & the Wolf" (26 min) several times, always uninterrupted.

I don't think cussing in song lyrics should be banned or restricted or whatever; I just hate "single versions" of anything (except "Don't Want You Back") for any reason: length, language, political correctness ("Let's Get It Started"), etc. The single of "Smooth," for example, cuts out half the guitar solo; it's a freaking SANTANA song, and they cut the GUITAR PART to make it fit a radio schedule.

Heck, I've even played songs that could get me fired because of their language (we're not FCC-regulated, but there are still some limits; it is a school station). Sometimes I flip on the mic and do a manual bleep, but no one but my manager cares if I don't.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"
