NIN new album, “The Slip” is free (legally)

nine inch nails: the slip

Another month, another new Nine Inch Nails album -- and this time it’s free.

Nine Inch Nails founder Trent Reznor released a 10-track, 43-minute studio recording, “The Slip,” through his Web site, nin.com, on Monday. It was made available for immediate download in four digital configurations, each of them free.

“Thank you for your continued and loyal support over the years - this one's on me,” Reznor wrote on the Web site shortly after midnight as he made the music available. He encouraged downloaders to share and remix tracks.

Some say that NIN and Radiohead releasing albums online these days is slowly killing the music business, I, on the other hand, like it. :P

^ I think that only refers to the Music Business insofar as record companies are concerned.

Record companies are unnecessary middlemen. I wish they would just die with dignity.

I'm listening to the album right now. Pretty cool stuff.

Note that Trent Reznor called Radiohead arrogant pricks for doing this exact same thing. The only difference was that Radiohead made theirs a 'choose-a-price' album. Radiohead never expected money or anything, merely the fun of the experiment.

I'm not liking that. I'm not calling hypocrisy, but it's not cool either.

No, he called it hypocrisy because they released really low bitrate (140 kbps MP3) songs with a shaky motive (They just were in a transition period between record companies, and wanted some positive press, in his opinion).

If only I liked NIN.

And remember, "Flashlights was free 16 months ago."

Actually, he said he was disappointed they didn't fully embrace the digital distribution method, and he was disappointed in the lower-quality sound files. He's also said he's a fan of Radiohead. I'd really like to see a quote, because I keep hearing this with no source. Sounds like a made-up controversy to me.

Reznor released Saul Williams' album Niggy Tardust with a donate-what-you-want format before this, as I'm sure many have heard.

Hrm. I suppose you're right. I think the people I heard it from might have blown it out of proportion, since they're humongous Radiohead fans, but I have no problem with the MP3s. Hell, they sound fine to me, but I'm not necessarily file-savvy, so whatever.

His opinion is wrong . Radiohead don't do what they do for the press, or they would have never made Kid A. They never needed to advertise or garner asspats from any kind of press, as the sales figures for the first week of In Rainbows (7 dollars and 41 cents) easily prove. They could have easily gained any record label they wanted without press, and out of principle, they ended up selecting a somewhat low-key label to release their future works.

Radiohead had (and still have) enough of a fanbase to do basically any music they wanted to.

I've downloaded the Slip album, but am yet to hear anything apart from Discipline.
