Playing guitar

How long will it be before my fingertips stop getting sore and swollen from practicing guitar?

Aside from that, anyone got seekrit gitar adviec to share with me? I don't want to get put off playing just because of some pointless frustration that I could've avoided. o_o

Much obliged.

So far, I've only taught myself the first part of Greensleeves (yeah, totally a song for guitar. totally.). Give me some TIME, man.

No finger-bleeding yet. Woo!

Diablo II Files - PlanetDiablo

Down the page if you want the MP3.
It's essentially a seven minute long epic acoustic guitar solo.

Pretty much any instrument (except, perhaps, piano) causes pain in some way when you start out. I mean, playing drums creates some pretty awesome calluses and blisters, not to mention the marks you get when you hit yourself on the leg, bongos will tear your palms up, guitar really messes with the fingers, wind instruments are hell on the lips and lungs... You have to love music to truly dig into an instrument. Or, you have to really want the sex musicians get. Either way.

Good luck learning; I've wanted to pick up some bass or guitar for a while, but since I still don't know the first note on a Piano, I should probably try to buckle down on that a bit more before my mom destroys me for saying I'd do it. If I can't do that, I may as well stick with drums.

^I never hit my leg.

Heck, even the plucky little Jew's harp has its drawbacks. First of all, you learn very quickly (& usually the hard way) not to let its tongue hit yours. Or your teeth, for that matter. Also, I can't even describe the cramping in the brace hand after playing for a while; any long piece without breaks is an ordeal.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

^^I rarely smack my leg, but occasionally I miss the snare when I get into it (and that has become a lot more controlled over the last two years).

Actually, now that I look back, over my four years I've only hit my leg twice. I'm a lot more careful after those, it's really painful.

Yeah, 'wind instruments' was a typo. I meant brass. Flute may mess with your fingers early on when you press down on the holes, but otherwise, nah.

Depends how soft your fingers/hands are. Could take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Also depends how much you play to start off.

Something like this helps build up finger/arm muscles.
