There's been some mindblowing stuff, so far, and it's hard to narrow it down like that, but this album is going to be hard to top. |

Normally by this time of year I would already have a top 30. First of all, the disappointments: As you all know, I was extremely disappointed in Nas's Untitled. It's just not that great. Viva La Vida was another extreme disappointment which has only further cemented my belief that Coldplay is incapable of releasing a solid LP. Gnarls Barkley just couldn't repeat the magic with The Odd Couple. Madvillainy 2 felt like a cheat. The Verve's new album shouldn't exist. Second of all, the pleasant surprises: I doubted Lil' Wayne for many years, but The Carter 3 was entertaining. I prefer the mixtapes, however. And "Phone Home" wins best rap song of the year (as much as I can't stand Cool & Dre). I never thought that Solange would ever be anything but Beyonce's forgotten little sister. I was wrong. The reviews of Supergrass's Diamond Hoo Haa had me thinking it would be a disappointment, but it was actually pretty decent. Stuff I kind of new would suck: Young Jeezy. Not that I actually made a conscious choice to hear the whole thing, *******s. Final Verdict: Everyone and their mother loves Vampire Weekend, and so do I. | Guest Posts: n/a | Only Jeezy album I like is "Thug Motivation 101". T.I. came correct on this album, "No Matter What" still stands for best Rap Song Of The Year, for me at least. But Wayne's "Mr. Carter" comes in very close for 1st. LL Cool J and Bun B also came correct. LL was on some good **** on Exit 13, it wasn't some kind of RnB type of ****. |

It's completely indescribable; TVotR has taken everything good about their previous releases, and created a beautiful mix of genres that utterly owns. It's a must-hear if you like creativity. 2: Middle 9 - The Sea That Has Become Known: A jazz record that is extremely mathy. Since I'm into Jazz and Math, mixing them (which they didn't do intentionally, but it worked) is like a custom-made superrecord just for my amusement. It caters so hard to my whims, in fact, that I wondered how I hadn't already discovered it. 3: This Town Needs Guns - Animals: Animals is what it's like when you mix structure with chaos. Being equal parts math and indie, they combine great vocals with difficult musical structure, incredible guitar-work, and very technical drumming, while never becoming particularly hard to listen to. 4: Portishead - Third: I don't need to explain this. This is the best Trip-Hop record in years, even if that label is tired and really doesn't even apply here. There is acid jazz, art-rock, smooth darkness, and delicious vocal-work from Beth Gibbons. This is every bit the classic that Dummy was, or at least in my opinion. 5: LITE - Phantasia: Beautiful math rock that pretty much rewards me in a different way every time I hear it. Highly melodic, yet still technical, this is a work of wonder that I think must be heard, not described, to adequately do it justice. Some honorable mentions: Feral Children - Second to Last Frontier: Nice, creative indie rock record. The Dead Science - Villainaire: A very strange record, mostly highlighting the vocalist. He sings in a warbling, almost unbelievable voice that is extremely discomforting, over the top of some very nice post-rock. I like. Vampire Weekend - s/t: I believe we all know what this is. The Mars Volta - The Bedlam in Goliath: And this too. The Black Mages - Darkness and Starlight: Uematsu never ceases to amaze me, and every other Black Mage is incredibly talented as well. The arrangements here are superior to the previous record, The Skies Aboive, but only slightly; another solid record for geeks who love metal versions of video game songs, like myself. Islands - Arm's Way: Another good Indie album, although my least favorite record on this list. Still very entyertaining; a few more listens may change my opinion. |

Yeah, I was surprised, too. Close second is The Sword--'Gods of the Earth'. Last edited by Booyakasha; 10-16-2008 at 08:53 PM. |

Purple, because ice cream has no bones. |
