Singles of 2008

Singles that rocked:
15. Deerhunter - Nothing Ever Happened
Tailored perfectly for the indie rock crowd.
14. Q-Tip - Gettin' Up
The Dillaesque piano loop will send old school heads running back to their Tribe records.
13. Jay-Z - Roc Boys
Okay, technically, this was 2007. One of the strongest songs off "American Gangster"
12. Oasis - Shock of the Lightning
Unlike that other Britpop era band making a comeback, Oasis didn't suck it up.
11. TV on the Radio - Halfway Home
Reminiscent of Post-Punk, repackaged for the Bush era.
10. Solange - Sandcastle Disco
Who would've thought Beyonce's little sister would be more than a novelty act?
9. Lil' Wayne - A Milli
Catchy, witty, stream of consciousness ODB-style rant.
8. Vampire Weekend - A-Punk
Ay, ay, ay, ay!
7. Big Boi f/ Andre 3000 & Raekwon - Royal Flush
Skew It on the Bar-B: Ten Years Later.
6. No Age - Teen Creeps
Playing with feedback is fun. Refreshingly unpretentious punk rock.
5. Estelle f/ Kanye West - American Boy
Light, funky, and unbelievably catchy.
4. Coldplay - Viva La Vida
Coldplay has great singles and boring albums. Viva la Vida is no exception.
3. Chairlift - Bruises
Once again, those iPod guys have decent taste in music.
2. M.I.A. - Paper Planes
"Bird Flu" was the best single of 2007, but this was the real winner on Kala. Got a bit overplayed. How do I know? I don't even listen to the radio intentionally yet I heard it many times on the radio.
1. Tilly & the Wall - Rainbows in the Dark
I'm not sure what the story is about, but it's a damn good song.

Most Irritating Singles:
1. Beyonce - If I Was a Boy
"Hey, I'm a condescending misandric bitch."
2. Katy Perry - I Kissed a Girl
Watered down Lily Allen is unintentionally homophobic. When Jill Sobule did a song with the same title, it was at least making a statement.
3. Ferras - Hollywood's Not America
So your girl turned out to be a playmate. That's her choice. Get over her. BTW, Hollywood is the epitome of America.
4. Rihanna - Take a Bow
Because there weren't enough songs about cheating in the past few years.
5. Mariah Carey - Bye Bye
Miss your lost family in a less annoying way, please.

Guilty Pleasures:
1. Katy Perry - Hot N Cold
Katy Perry may be a watered down Lily Allen, but this is actually a decent pop song.
2. The Last Goodnight - Stay Beautiful
So they're Maroon 5 wannabes... this song reminds me of "You Get What You Give"
3. Maroon 5 f/ Rihanna - If I Never See Your Face Again
Actually, I didn't even really like it that much, but I didn't hate it.

I wish TVotR had released Crying as a single, but I agree about Halfway Home. Love that song.

As of 2008, I'm no longer single. Does that count?

[Close: T.I. - What Up/What's Happ'nin?: When you can make a DISS track and it can be a Billboard Hot 100....wow]
20. Charles Hamilton f/ B.o.B. and Asher Roth - Change Gon' Come
Never thought I'd hear a good sample of a Sam Cook classic, but lo and behold, these 3 came through

19. Baby D- I'm Bout Money
Typical, but it did it's job nonetheless

18. Janelle Monae - Many Moons
Incredible. Not only is the song creative, the whole album is. On the outside, it looks like she's been doing one too many drugs, but it's a classic love story, to a futuristic beat.

17. Remy Shand - Ripened and Consumed
Remy is back, and he couldn't have come back better

16. Natasha Bedingfield - Angel
Her whole album is incredible...and this isn't even the best song

15. B.o.B. - Generation Lost
First song I ever heard from this guy, and I was amazed and have been ever since

14. T.I. - No Matter What
Great song to start off a great album (single wise), showed a mature side of TIP that we knew was there

13. Kanye West f/ Dwele - Flashing Lights
Incredibly creative

12. Gnarls Barkley - Going On
Classic Lo, and it was over a Danger Mouse beat (of course)

11. T-Pain featuring Ludacris - Chopped N Skrewed
One of the most creative songs of the year as well

10. John Legend - Green Light f/ Andre 3000
I didn't expect this combination, but I loved it.

9. Kanye West - Heartless
As much of a disappointment as his album was, there were a few great songs.

8. Erykah Badu - Honey
Forgot about this, didn't you?

7. Michael Jackson - For All Time
Oh you didn't know?

6. Solange Knowles - Sandcastle Disco
She's creative. More creative than her sister, but less talented. Her uniqueness will be a secret because people won't bother with "Beyonce's little sister"

5. B.o.B. - I'll Be In The Sky
Classic. A slept on classic.

4. Nappy Roots f/ Greg Nice - No Static
They came back in a BIG way

3. Big Boi featuring Andre 3000 and Raekwon - Royal Flush
Whole song was incredible, Andre's verse ****ted on about every song that was released last year.

2. DJ Drama featuring OutKast and Marsha Ambrosious- Art of Storytelling Part 4
I still would like to know where part 3 is...

1. Lupe Fiasco - Superstar
Technically it was late 07, but still, it carried through 08, and it's all around success is a big indicator at just how great it was.

How can she be gay when her song clearly sees homosexuality as the trend of the moment? Right now there's a disturbing trend of young women who think it's "cool" or "funny" to pretend to be lesbians, and they don't even know why sensible people are offended by it. There is inherent homophobia in doing so.

^ I don't think there's really a trend of that, I think she sold that many albums because even in the progressively less homophobic times homosexuality is still a "taboo subject" so what would your uptight mom think if she heard you listening to music about a girl who was a LESBIAN? And she liked it? Well then your parents would go berserk! A GIRL AND A GIRL KISSING? AND LIKING IT? THE VERY THOUGHT IS PREPOSTEROUS!

The same thing happened with Thrash Metal back in the late 80s/early 90s. Except some Thrash Metal bands are actually good.

^ Fail.

It has nothing to do with the education you receive. It has to do with girls in a college environment vs. girls in a high school environment.

Right, right.

So it's not ageism.

Gotcha, I see. Sorry for the confusion.
