I still hate Twilight...

but Thom Yorke and Bon Iver are writing new songs for the New Moon soundtrack.

It's becoming really hard to hate it now.

Don't think about the music. Think about what the music is for.

Eh, the movies are likely to be no better or worse than your average teen-fantasy, regardless of the crazed following (they all have to follow the usual "rules" of movie making, ya know?). The sountrack for the first movie had some wickedsweet songs, too, so whoever's in charge of that has decent taste. XD

From what I understand, Debussy's "Clair de Lune" was used in the first. "Clair de Lune" will always be one of my favorite compositions, and being used in Twilight will never ruin that for me.

The real ruiner of hipness is the insanely overrated Garden State, since it tries actively to be hip and only succeeds for about 10 minutes.

Of course, I tend to associate "Clair de Lune" with the excellent film Tokyo Sonata and the even more excellent All About Lily Chou-Chou, the former of which is my reigning favorite film of 2008, the same year that the Twilight movie was released.

Anyway, it looks as if hating Twilight is the in thing right now, so I've decided to be indifferent toward it.

Yeah, it really could be a lot worse overall, there's not a lot of point in focusing immense rage at it. At least it's not a rewrite of classic literature or something. It's bad enough when they do that with video games and movies.

Or a shoddy remake of a great Asian film, the latter of which becomes obscured in the process.

Example: Steven Spielberg's upcoming remake of Oldboy starring Will Smith is a likely candidate for this. Anyone who has seen Park Chan-Wook's original can attest to what an atrocity this is, both in that the original is nearly flawless and that the parties involved, though talented, simply aren't right for ****ing OLDBOY.

Now that's something to get angry about.

*snort* I remember when Leonardo DiCaprio was god's gift to teenage girls, because of the Romeo+Juliet and Titanic movies. The Twilight obsession/hatred is just another round of the same well-trodden track. Romance, as a genre, will always have a certain level of insanity included in its fans. o____o

Oh, right. Music. Uuuhhhh, if nothing else, I get really irritable that the fans of Twilight will go nuts over the main actor guy singing country/folk influenced songs, yet be so ignorant and biased that they proclaim to hate the entire genre anyway (since eeeeveryone hates country music). It would be different if they used their newfound interest to expand their knowledge and have an open mind about other songs, but it's only because the actor was singing it, and nothing else. >:[

I was listening to "15 Step" by Radiohead one day and one chick saw what I had on my iPod and was like "so u liek twilite 2 omg"

^ I'm hoping the inclusion of Iron & Wine in the last film and Bon Iver in this one will stop those people from being ignorant.

I officially approve of Thom Yorke writing music for Twilight, simply due to the fact that it allowed for this picture to be created:

Yeah, I actually like the song they used by Iron and Wine for the last film (Flightless Bird, American Mouth), although I'm not sure where they put it, and it's painful to tell people you like Radiohead or Iron and Wine nowadays because most of the Twilight fangirls think those bands were not famous until Twilight. This is disregarding the fact that Radiohead have consistently released tons of influential albums and recently became one of the first to allow their album to be freely downloaded from their site (note I said one of, not the). And Iron and Wine has been an indie favorite for years, ever since the lo-fi masterpiece The Creek Drank the Cradle.

And now Bon Iver too? Jesus, whoever coordinates these soundtracks must get an indie folk boner like I do, which is cool, but wow. I mean, I appreciate the exposure it's giving all of these bands, but man, it's hard to explain to the fangirls that, believe it or not, I had actually heard of these guys before Twilight and wouldn't have even been aware of their presence in said movies had it not been for this topic. And then I feel like an indiefag because it reminds me of those kids who stop listening to a band when they get popular just because they got popular. And then I have to remind myself that I'm not going to jump ship on a few of my favorite bands just because of how overrated and ridiculous the Twilight series is.

AAAARGH THIS WAS THEIR MASTER PLAN TO SILENCE THE HATERS I JUST KNOW IT CURSE YOU MEYER

Appealing to the indie crowd is the in thing that Hollywood wants to do these days. This is for many reasons:

1. Going to films is a popular pastime amongst the High School and College crowds who make up the indie scene.
2. Thanks to the internet, there is a higher visibility of indie artists, many of whom have become very popular. See: Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear.
3. Indie tracks are a lot less expensive to use than Britney Spears. Licensing music is an extremely difficult, expensive, complicated, and in my opinion, unfair process. There's three separate legal fees that need to be payed for each song, and sometimes the songs may be licensed only for theatrical use but maybe not for the soundtrack album or in certain instances not even the DVD.
4. Film directors tend to be the artsy type.

Anyway, for a good movie that uses lots of indie music, check out (500) Days of Summer. It opens with a Regina Spector song and a major plot point is based around The Smiths. Not to mention that Joseph Gordon-Levitt often dons a Joy Division shirt.

As far as dealing with fangirls goes, if a cute one comes by, just claim that you absolutely adored Twilight and get some lollapalooza.

^ Yeah, for licensing issues Massive Attack's music has appeared in tons of films without ever making it to the soundtrack release. It's conflicted with their recording contract. Taking the standpoint of a recording label, it's a totally fair practice if the artists agreed to it in the first place. Bands need to hire attorneys to look over their legal documents if they're not equipped to, before they sign anything.

And liking Radiohead is part of hipsterism. If the folks behind Twilight wanted their film to achieve widespread appeal, and of course they do, it's just reasonable to buy into the culture where you can. What they don't understand is what a faux pas it would be for the hipster crowd to actually like something like Twilight, anyway. So what they're really aiming at is the preteen crowd that the culture will eventually filter down into. I mean, when I was in the 5th grade, it was still popular to wear plaid shirts and baggy pants, but none of the kids knew where it came from. Same thing with the No Fear t-shirts, and all of the other fads that 20 year olds had disowned a year or so before.

Radiohead might be seen as an in band with the recent-indie fans, but I still remember them as the major commercial act that they were when I was younger, anyway. It's never been cool to like bands that get played on the radio.

Just think of recent net-related trends like Lolcats, etc. Some of that stuff is or was hilarious, but you'd have to be so out of the loop to like it now, and that sort of crap is still resounding with 12 year olds who imagine they're "net-savvy".

Also, middle-aged women. They print up lolcats and then act like they're sharing some incredible in-joke with you when they show you.

The best thing to do is avoid talking to other people. Then you can delude yourself into believing they're not all retarded and incapable of knowing anything outside of their own pop-culture saturation.

If you want to be properly bemused/frightened, you should read what bands Meyer claimed to have listened to throughout the writing of the Twilight series (and I avoid the term "saga" intentionally), and how much they conflict with the soundtrack.

Hmm, apparently she listened to Linkin Park, too. I guess she was inspired to make her story suck as much as their music does.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

@AI: I agree about Radiohead being way too much of an 'in' band among the Pitchfork-swear-by-ing hipsters. I've liked Radiohead since before I knew they were cool, but then again, that's because I never looked at review sites in late 2007 anyway, haha.

@SD: I kno rite, I heard about the Muse thing and was like 'wut'.
