But what albums do you start with? somehow, 4chan seems to be the ones with the answer. /mu/ has produced some pretty awesome lists, and here is a collection "/mu/'s essentials" archive |

And for real, a lot of these categories are crud that some dude in a basement made up. Especially the ones with prefixes like "pre-", "post-", "anti-", et cet. I don't want to know what the music isn't; I want to know what it is. And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!" |

Million dollar quartet stands on it own in many ways, and Iron maiden, slayer and Metallica would not exist without Motörhead. |

And besides the "classics" section of the general list, there really hasn't been anywhere to put people from the million dollar quartet or Motorhead (except maybe Thrash Metal, but they're really not Thrash) ^^ Yeah, I pretty much hate tags like that. "OK IT'S 1980 WHAT'S THIS NEW ENERGETIC MUSIC THAT'S ALL THE RAGE THESE DAYS" WELL THE FIRST WAVE OF PUNK BANDS JUST ENDED... IDEA! POST-PUNK! And I'm not sure what's necessarily the problem with the happy music list. Much of the list is music that I listen to in a very happy mood, like Matt & Kim, Fang Island, Neon Indian, Passion Pit... |

And i have some understanding of the missing topics so it's more of a mention of some stuff missing , with some time i think it get's more "decent" |

The reason I have a hard time is that their music sounds in no way even remotely similar to each other by any stretch of even the most deranged imagination. (Also, I don't get how an "Essential Happy" list can exclude the Polyphonic Spree, the single happiest band in the history of recorded music.) And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!" |

It's not some weird genre. It's just a list of albums to listen when you're in a good mood. The bawwwwwwwwwwwwcore list is the exact opposite. |

I mean, I'm not supporting this whole "THROW POST- ON IT AND HIPSTERS WILL LISTEN" thing, but the names actually make sense and they do a decent job putting like-minded bands together for the convenience of the listener. I'm all about transcending genres, but sometimes bands don't, and they fit together thematically. Hence the list. |

I guess they just decided "REALLY AIRY SOMETIMES GUITAR-BASED AMBIENT MUSIC WITH A CLIMAX" was too long. That, and it's also actually "post-modern rock" and somehow the "modern" got knocked out, which makes it complete nonsense. |

"Post-modern rock" is rock based on post-modernism; that means something. "Post-rock" is music that comes after rock; that doesn't mean anything. Everybody's talking 'bout the "new sound"; funny, but it's still rock & roll to me. And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!" |

Genre doesn't dictate the style of music, the style of music dictates genre. And genres are all just made up. They don't mean the same thing between separate persons. So is the rest of language. Words are all only context-relevant. It may as well be understood that the context can vary between people. |
