Musical Breakthrough Experiences

Ever had one of those experiences where an album or song clicked for the first time and elevated itself from a mere collection of songs or just another track on an album to something more akin to a personal soundtrack? If so, relate those incidents right 'chere.

I remember when The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me by Brand New first clicked... I was driving, air conditioner on full blast, with my speakers cranked way up, grinning from ear to ear all for reasons that sadly were doomed in the end, but at that moment everything made sense. Quite a good day.

I've also had three of my favorite albums click for me laying in the dark staring up at my ceiling (Black Sheep Boy, The Midnight Organ Fight, and my second real "experience" with Kid A).

I wouldn't say an entire album has done that for me, but I've had moments when on random playlists, the perfect song will come on and just sum up my entire life in that moment.

Sorry, I realize that's not on topic.

Hey, it works. :P I should actually probably generalize this topic to both songs and albums, since it actually goes both ways.

Not when it comes to albums but with songs that have made me understand the rest of a artist/bands work.

For example Motörhead, we all know ace of spades and i only knew about that song when i was around 13-15 then i heard Bomber and Overkill and since then i have been hooked in everything they have done!

Allso Booker T & MGs.

I heard Green onions and thought Damn this is great and im sure that i would not have listened to anyother of their songs if it wasn't for green unions, it's allso Duck Dunn that made me want to play Bass.

Songs for Dustmites has been my entering- & leaving-Kirksville music since I bought it in August 2004, less than a month before starting college. When I moved out of Kirksville for good last summer, the title track was playing as I passed the city limits, & the last line made me tear-up so much I almost couldn't see the road anymore:

And, of course, as an aspiring drummer hungry for feedback who made up a cool nickname nobody else uses, this song is one of my personal themes:

So I was really into both Neutral Milk Hotel and Arcade Fire for a while, and then the power went out one day. I listened to NMH's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea and AF's Funeral that day. No distractions, just the music and my eyes closed. Those albums became even more amazing than I thought they were.

Grace by Jeff Buckley, and XO by Elliott Smith also clicked even more with me on really dark late nights.

I once listened to Miho Hatori's Ecdysis on a lonely, late night while I was in the hospital. I've never felt more warm and cozy in my entire life.

Kanye West's 808's & Heartbreak clicked with me after someone special told me she was transferring to a different university right before finals week. It would've probably eventually ended up clicking with me anyway, but that helped reverse my initial negative reaction to [the album].

Hard to say. I used to find music compelling, then I learned to write it, now a majority of it's rather unimpressive to me. I used to be really really into Stabbing Westward, when I was a teenager. Years ago, now, though.

^^I dunno. It worked the opposite for me. I now have a lot more respect and admiration for other musicians and music in general since I started writing songs. I suppose the effect is different from person to person.

Then again, I'm the kind of person who gets really emotionally invested in music and waxes all hyperbolic and nostalgic and poetic and whatnot every time something even slightly impresses me, so there's that.

Finding the majority of music unimaginative or listening to and liking SW? lol

I've not had an album do that for me... but songs at odd times have certainly caught my attention in unexpected ways and seemed to have cleared something up at the time...

Bump, because a two month delay isn't going to stop me from talking about this.

I've kind of had a few experiences like this, I guess.

First off, The Protomen. Not to say that it really relates to my life, since it's all post-apocalyptic, but feeling of motivation and urge to make a difference, that really got to me. Also, the sheer imagination pulsing through it, a sort of flowing and imaginative story board in my head, of the colors blue and red amongst a barrage of dusted structures and rusted metal. It's beautiful.

The Will of One is really a stand-out for me, a lot of motivation to it and the chorus (But if I staaay here wiith you/then I will never know the truth) really made an impact for my listening experience.

Hope rides alone, brothers and sisters.

"Drowning Lessons" really stood out for me off of My Chemical Romance's first album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love. Not that the lyrics really relate to me (Without a sound I took her down/And dressed in red and blue I squeezed/an imaginary wedding gown that you can't wear in front of me/A kiss goodbye, your twisted shell/As rice grains and roses fall at your feet/Let's say goodbye the hundredth time/And then tomorrow we'll do it again), the emotion in the singer's voice and the guitars at the beginning really makes the song for me. Now that I read the lyrics, I think it's about worrying that you'll kill your partner or something.
