Álvaro José "Joe" Arroyo (1955-2011), was Colombia's greatest interpreter of salsa, tropical and traditional music for his nearly-lifelong career. Playing Joe Arroyo is a guarantee that people will get up from their seats and begin dancing. His songs, old and new alike, have never stopped filling our dancehalls, our radios, our music collections. Perhaps his best-known song is this tale about an African slave couple and his protest when she was mistreated by their Spanish owner. Rebelión It's amusing that his stage name isn't read as in English, "Joe", but rather with a Spanish "e", the kind that English speakers can't pronounce without extending it into an "i" sound. I remember my parents playing an LP with Joe's (to that point) greatest hits, back when I was a little kid. He was wearing a ring (I now realize it was his wedding ring), which I thought was weird, because jewelry is for women, right? The brass arrangements in this song are unforgettable. Te quiero más Sadly, he was faced with nearly constant health problems for the last thirty or so years. False rumors about his death were always being spread. He was once in a long coma; upon his recovery, he made a song as thanks to God. A mi Dios todo le debo He died yesterday morning after about a month in the hospital. Had he been healthy that weekend, I would have gone to his concert in my town, which was of course cancelled. We Colombians mourn his death and will forever remember him and his wonderful music. Thank you, Joe. Bonus tracks Tal para cual El torito | ||||||||||
