Cool Daily Video Game Tune

Video games produce a lot of really awesome music, as I'm sure you've noticed. As both an avid video game player and devoted music listener I happen to pick up a lot of music that I really like. So from now on, I'm going post one song per day in this thread for you to enjoy. Some days, if you're lucky, I might post two songs. These are songs that are good enough I think every gamer should hear them. My hope is that you'll give the music I post a listen each day, and maybe find something that you really like.

Today, I'm gonna throw out two songs. Today's songs, chosen by the Random Number God, are:

"Title Theme" - The Lost World: Jurassic Park (Genesis)
Composer: Unknown
Mood: Bold

"Mystic Cave Zone" - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Genesis)
Composer: Masato Nakamura
Mood: Funky

Both of these are pretty catchy.

"The Man With The Machine Gun" - Final Fantasy VIII (PSX)
Composer: Nobuo Uematsu
Mood: Intense

Laguna's funky battle theme. Better than the main battle theme, if you ask me.

Interestingly, that's one of the few songs from FF8 that I didn't much care for. Otherwise, I am greatly enjoy this thread. :3

Never, because no game you care about has good music.

I'm more interested in obscure titles like the Jurassic Park theme for the Mega Drive. It's actually well put-together for the machine's audio hardware, unlike many other tracks from the games that graced Sega's 3rd system. The FF8 track sounds a bit like a less-tasteful MIDI version of a lost, classic Mega Man track. Its tone is great, but I'm not digging the instruments and the digital reverb overkill for a fast track in that style.

The Sonic games have always had a divisive style, where the music is very admirably put together, but the synths available on Sega's hardware were not versatile enough to fit the style of the songs as they would should the composer have free range of choice. It shows very well how the hardware limited the works, but it also highlights to me how important it is to play to the strengths of your instruments (and for system engineers to choose more all-purpose synths).

Maybe some of you who have seen my awesome LP of E.V.O. will recognize this song. It's the melody that plays when (MAJOR SPOILER ALERT)

the dinosaurs go extinct.

"Rogueport" - Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (GCN)
Composers: Yo****o Hirano & Yuka Tsujiyoko
Mood: Bold

Of all the hub town themes in the Paper Mario series, this is my favorite. I think it does a good job of revving you up for how adventurous this new setting is for Mario.

How about a second tune?

"Realm Overworld" - The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (DS)
Composer: Toru Minegishi
Mood: Dramatic

The DS Zelda games didn't exactly have a ton of awesome original music, but the overworld theme for Spirit Tracks is pretty gorgeous in my opinion.

I tend to play all my games without the sound on... this has been a long habit that I find hard to change...

The Spirit Tracks tune was nice...

The EVO tune was pretty atmospheric, I like having some pads, etc, in games in a lot of instances. Then again, too many games scores nowadays avoid leads and so on simply because the player can find them distracting. That said, it does pretty well on the old hardware.

I wouldn't have expected an orchestral remix of the Gourmet Race theme, but I like it.

I'm a big fan of Diablo II music. It's a shame when I play with Tazy he turns the music off on his. <_>

Oh, and Cave Story is awesome. I'm having a lot of fun watching your avatar dance to the beat.

The theme that plays when you fight Beatrix. It's a fairly simple, yet dramatic piece.
