At first, I figured I was going to UNM (University of New Mexico) just like everybody else around here. So, that's the only place I had my ACT score sent, filled out stuff to get information from them, and basically the place I was intending to go. But I hate that place. It's crowded, people don't even look before crossing the street, and there's gotta be a reason the ducks run away from everybody. About a month ago, my math teacher said to me "Computer Engineering? UNM? No. You need to go to Tech." I mentioned it to my mom, and while my dad, who's currently station at the Pentagon, was in town during my spring break we took a trip down there to look at the place. We started with lunch at a place called Martha's Black Dog. If you're ever in Socorro, be sure to go there. Good stuff. Their Sam Hamich kicks the crap out of that "panini sandwich" crap Einstein Brothers calls food. I wonder if they even have that stuff anymore. Try their strawberry smoothie, but don't get seconds. It kind of dies on you when you get a second glass. Then it was off to Tech. We had a woman in the office explain just about everything to us, gave us an information folder, and told us about a tour of the dorms. After that, we wandered around some other select locations. I loved the place. Had just about every I wanted (they don't seem of offer languages), was relatively peaceful (the woman said there's only about 1,500 people who go there. That's about how many people go to my high school, all on a larger campus.), and the ducks don't haul ass on sight of people. Hell, a goose kept nipping me, and the rest were practically tripping me when I started tossing Kix. Duck tested, feeder approved. We filled out the online application, but the mail response said we left off some things. So, after my mother dropped my brother off at school today, we went back, taking along some papers, all in that folder they gave us earlier. Presented my transcript and ACT scores to the women in the office, filled out some papers, wrote a check, a wait, and was presented with a letter of acceptance. What's odd is I thought you couldn't be accepted until they got official documents; these papers were just things my school printed out and made copies of. Actually, the chick we talked to last time did say an official one wasn't required. Maybe they also loved how high the Technical score on my ACT was. Because I don't live in Socorro (it's about an hour's drive between Socorro and Albuquerque, something nobody in the world would be willing to do twice a day.), I had to apply for campus boarding. The woman in the office said the dorm registrar was probably closed for lunch, and she gave us a couple of passes to eat in the dining hall for free. Sweet. It had its ups and downs. It was the first time in two years I had a whole apple. The eggs were done just right, their rice was tasty, and the cherry cake was pretty good. But the turkey tasted a bit odd, and the cherry tomatoes had tiny black speks on them. Sad thing was, it was the most satisfying meal I've had in a while. So then we filled out the dorm paperwork (most of which I had filled out at home, but some things on the form didn't make sense), and tried to find the chemistry labs. A nice young man actually gave us a tour of the building with the labs. There's also an impressive mineral museum there. We visited the ducks again, and that goose that kept biting me last time was back. We went to an ice cream place called Holy Cow!, gased up, and came home. "Socorro" is Spanish for "Help", and boy, did I get it. ... For those who just scrolled through all of that, basically, I got a letter of acceptance from New Mexico Tech.
