Unfortunately, even if you are an ancient user, who's been around for five years, it's still incredibly difficult even if you attempt to reconcile the cameo with the plotline or even make it enhance the story.

That's my logical bit, enhanced by reality.

I never understood why people would want cameos. I rarely have found comix character based on real people to be entertaining. Only Jay Resop really. And to some extent Kyle and Silence as well.

No, they don't. Nobody's laughing when Purple Megaman Recolor/Author/Dave pops up to deliver your hackneyed punchlines, and surprise quickly turns to annoyance and finally hatred when a comic swipes characters from whatever series they can get their hands on.

The only good cameo sequences are the ones where you might not even notice them, and maybe ones like Brian's dog comic where they were just so wildly inappropriate it was funny. But you can only pull a cameo once and even then if nobody knows the character or if you didn't use the character right you lose.
