I Got a TurboGrafx CD

And the following games:

Alien Crush
Keith Courage in Alpha Zones
Ninja Spirit
Ys Book 1&2
Ys 3: Wanderers from Ys

Sinistron and Cosmic Fantasy 2 are on their way. You might remember the latter from my Worst Game Covers article. Well, now I can finally see if the game is as bad as the cover art (Alex Kidd sure was)

I have my eyes set on a number of others, with my top priorities being Order of the Griffon, Psychosis, Neutopia I and II, and Vasteel. If I can find it really cheap I might pick up R-Type just to add it to my collection and see if anything was altered from the original, but I already have R-Types for the PSX which has an arcade perfect port of this and R-Type II, so I'm not going to break my neck searching for it.

What exactly is TurboGraphx? I know it's an old video gaming system, that's for sure. But I'd like to learn more. -CSM

This of course begs the question: Why?

This page explains it better than I could.

But in a nutshell, the TurboGrafx-16 is supposed to be a 16-bit console but supposively it's not (what it is, I don't know - it doesn't say) that used credit-card sized game chips called HUcards. Later it got a CD attachment, which may or may not be formally known as the TurboGrafx CD (however, it's what everyone refers to it as). I'm not entirely sure how they go together - there seems to be a third piece that the TurboGrafx and the CD unit are sitting on, however I'm not willing to mess with it to find out and possibly break something. But you then put a HUcard that contained the CD player information into where you normally inserted a HUcard game (think how the Game Boy Player for the GCN works). For some really advanced games called "Super CDs" you needed a System 3.0 card. Later the TurboDuo was released which was everything, the HUcard slot, the CD player, and the System 3.0 support, rolled up into one console. Except they can go for $250 to $300 just for the system.

Well, let's see:

For $250, plus tax (which is about 7% where I live, so about $17.50), internet fees (though feel free to inform me if there are none), $6 for the game, and the sanity to find one, I could have bought a Wii and Alien Crush, which out of the twelve games I've mentioned is the only one available on the Virtual Console, and is also the one I'm least interested in (I really only got it because the guy who was selling Ninja Spirit was also selling it). I seriously doubt somebody's going to put the other 11 games on the VC overnight some Monday. I really wanted Ys, and I wasn't willing to twiddle my thumbs for two years in hopes the Virtual Console got it. And I'm sure I've already made it quite clear what my interest in the actual Wii is.

For $148 plus $15 shipping, I got the TurboGrafx CD, Keith Courage, and Ys 3 (which can go for $50 on eBay), a spiffy carrying case to store the system in (however, the AV cables make you take it out when in use), plus access to any nearly any TurboGrafx game I want (except for Super CD Games which I would have to either get a System 3.0 card for or a TurboDuo, the former costs $150, the latter $250, but the only ones I have any remote interest in are Gate of Thunder and Lords of Thunder, and I have it on good authority that I'm not missing much). Plus as a collector, I find it quite nice to have the original copies and their manuals.

Wait, you were asking why I bought the system at all, not why I chose it over the Wii?

Also, throw Legendary Axe and Final Lap Twin into the pile. I haven't actually paid for these yet, because the guy's selling off several TG games, and he's got more up tomorrow.

It's not like any system has thousands of games. In fact, the TurboGrafx only had about a hundred games released in America. Now, over in Japan, it got almost one thousand, but not thousands. The NES has about 760 licensed titles.

That sounds kinda interesting... but y'know, I'll always stick to ROM's xD. I guess it's me.

Is it in for Europe, and if so, how many games? But it sounds like an awful lot of money though... xD

I'm don't know if the TG-16 was ever released in Europe, or what games were released there if the system was.

The actual TurboGrafx shouldn't be too expensive, although they're still pricier and far less common than, say, a Super Nintendo (TG-16 sold 10 million versus SNES's 50 million) - it's just the CD attachment that cranked up the price (although when the thing was new, it was supposed to have cost 400 dollary-doos, and I don't think that's in today's money value).

The TG-16 didn't fare well in America because of price, Sega entering the ring, and Nintendo's strangehold on third party developers. The thing flew with flying colors in Japan, and it's the platform Castlevania: Rondo of Blood was originally released on.

Europe only has E.T

And it's only because Atari had to get rid of them, and all the land they bought was not big enough.

I'm kidding....
