Very similar to a common derogatory term for Italians, Goombah, it was used in The Godfather.

Do you thin that's just a coincidence, or do you think there might have been something subliminal there? Mario and Luigi being Italian.

It's probably not a coincidence.

In Japanese, it's a bit more prosaic: they are originally called "Kuribō".
