Emulation Forum -- NOT ROMs.

A forum to talk about emulation in general, not about actual ROMs. Like, for instance, how an emulator project is going.

I don't think enough people care about emulation on this forum.

Of course, i'd love to play some people on 3rd Strike or something over 2df.

I think it's a good idea. say, would "ROM hacking" discussion be allowed on the supposed emulation forum? because they are technicly emulation projects.

Me? No. Emulators are perfectly legal as long as you don't use them to play commercial games.

This would just cause a glut of locked "OMG ROMS" topics. Probably wouldn't work.

I thought it was legal as long as you bought an actual copy of the game and dumped it onto your computer yourself.

Who DOESN'T love emulation? The only thing I hate about it is I can't find what I need. Which is gay.

I think with Nintendo reselling their games on the Wii it's sort of controversial.

But personally, I still feel if you payed for it once, there's nothing wrong with owning a copy of the game on PC.

Nintendo thinks that's wrong. The right thing would be to buy the same game over and over again, until all your money is theirs.

All the people getting sued by companies for stealing their games is totally heterosexual!

actually it is legal if you already own the game. like say you owned a physical copy of Chrono Trigger for the SNES, it would be perfectly legal to download the ROM of Chrono Trigger. however if you were to download that same ROM file, but did not pay for the actual game then it would be illegal to own the ROM for more than 24 hours.

so as long as you own a physical copy of a game then it would be okay to downlad the roms of your game collection.

I however do have certain restrictions that I have placed on myself as far as emulation goes.

1. I only have emulators of defunct systems that they don't make games for anymore (NES, SNES, Genesis, master system, gb/gba, N64, etc.)

2. I only download ROM files of games I own permanently, for games I don't own I download a ROM for a 24hour time period and play through it to see if it warrents buying for my systems and if it does then I'll go out and buy it at a retro gaming store that still sells those kinds of games. and don't get me wrong it's convenient to have the roms on your comp but nothing beats the experience of playing the game on the actual console, and I still play my old systems alot, and they are still working in perfect condition (except the NES, it still needs regular cleaning sessions to keep it running smoothly)

3.ROM hacks, like total conversions to create a new gaming experience or level edits or text edits are legal as long as the original credits and copyrights are still in-tact. it is not legal, however, to completely remove any evidence of the original staff and copyrights. for example, when you boot up a super metroid rom with a hack patched to it and it says "nintendo @1993" as well as "rom hack made by soandso @ 2004" then it is perfectly legal. and I refuse to download any romhack that does not credit the original creators.

(I know kargath will argue with me on that last point but I honestly don't care, I asked my town's judge and three different lawyers (my lawyer, my dad's lawyer and my friend's lawyer) about that and fanworks and they all said that as long as it was non-profit and as long as credit was givin to the original creators then there was not a problem with plagerism/copyright infringement unless the creator himself gave a cease and desist order)

Many people believe this, but that's not true. It's illegal to distribute commercial ROMs in the first place (unless you have rights to do so). The only legal way to own a commercial ROM is if you buy the game and dump it yourself.

I think every other person has a different "fact" on how legal ROMs are.

And in the end, no one gives a ****.

[Hm. It seems this 2DF thing is legit. ~SML]

Bee tee dubs, the twenty-four hour rule is not a "real" rule, as in it's not written anywhere in any laws or regulations. Someone said it and it stuck, like using ten percent of our brain, or that Arnold should be governor.

We don't use only about 10% of our brains? Oh, and I don't know about Arnold but he can't be worse than Springer. I heard he was a Mayor and the world's still spinning.
