Analyst Predicts Netflix on Wii Within a Year

Pachter Predicts Netflix on Wii Within a Year

Quote:

Information about the PlayStation 3 Netflix streaming has been trickling out the last few days, and analyst Michael Pachter believes the company isn't planning to stop there. GamesIndustry.biz reports that Pachter thinks we'll see a similar deal coming to the Nintendo Wii "in the next 12 months." Essentially, he speculates that the disc-based solution is Netflix's way around the constraints of the deal with Microsoft. "Because [PS3 and Wii] have open architecture Internet browsers built-in, the solution proposed for the PS3 would likely not violate the terms of Microsoft's exclusivity," he said.

We know Netflix wants to offer the service without a disc "at some point," so if Pachter's hunch is correct we'll see it once the exclusive terms expire or the two companies change them. As for Wii support, it seems likely that the company is planning an offering a similar solution, especially since Netflix surveys regarding the Wii have specifically mentioned a free streaming disc.

While it would be a nice feture I'm not sure that it'll happen given how Nintendo had to be drug kicking and screaming into online gaming, in addition to how reluctant they were inregaurds to allowing DVD capeablity to the Gamecube.

Most online games aren't a good money-making scenario. I wouldn't blame Nintendo for dodging a bullet and not plunging millions into an internet-heavy scenario.

If & when I finally get a Rev, all of that storage space is for games.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"
