Nintendo Showing Vitality Sensor, Compatible Games at E3 2010

Nintendo Showing Vitality Sensor, Compatible Games at E3 2010

Quote:

No doubt the biggest what-the-hell moment of E3 2009 was the reveal of Nintendo's Wii Vitality Sensor, a device that will read a players pulse to... well, we're still not sure, because Nintendo didn't give many details. And now it appears it'll be exactly one year later when those details will finally be filled in: Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said they plan to show off the device at E3 next year, along with the first compatible games.

"We will show off the Vitality Sensor with software [at the show]," Fils-Aime succinctly said to Kotaku. "I'm not going to give you any more hints beyond that." This seems to suggest their original intention to release the device "not too late in the next year," according to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata back in August, is probably no longer the case.

E3 2010 is scheduled to take place June 15-17 next year, so we have exactly that much time between now and then to get all of our insane theories and speculation out of our system (for our part, we're still pretty sure Nintendo will make Mario Super Sleuths: Lie Detection Unit a flagship title). And with some "surprises" regarding the next Wii Zelda also planned for E3 2010, it's looking like it'll be quite an eventful show for Nintendo and Nintendo fans alike.
I'm pretty sure this has been discussed here before... I'm interested in seeing this thing put to use.

I hope it's comfortable.

Yep. As I said when the thing was first revealed I'd love to see this used in an Eternal Darkness type game.

The Wii Finger Dismemberment Device. Out in 2010.

Reminds me of the time I pierced my finger with a tiny stapler, because that's what it looks like.

They're going to reveal that it doesn't just read your pulse, but your O2 sats as well.

Is "WiiRelax" the First Vitality Sensor Game?

Quote:
There's still very little known about Nintendo's strategy for their peculiar Vitality Sensor peripheral, but a new trademark filing for PAL territories may have given us this much: the title of the doohickey's first compatible game.

Siliconera reports (via Kotaku) that "WiiRelax" has popped up in the European trademark database, which certainly sounds like the name for a Vitality Sensor game. The device clamps to the player's index finger to read their pulse, and when the Vitality Sensor debuted at E3 earlier this year, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata explained that, "Games have been used for stimulation, but maybe it won't be long until games are used for relaxation and even to fall asleep."

An interesting sidenote to this filing is that back in April, Italian video developer Pub Company announced their own Wii game that was also titled "Wii Relax" (albeit with a space in between the words). But the project hasn't been heard of since, and even their website no longer seems to exist. So either Nintendo shut them down or they canceled the game on their own, but either way it doesn't look like it'll block whatever Nintendo's "WiiRelax" project is from eventual release.

Another sidenote: Is it just us, or does the prospect of being attached to a device that can measure just how badly you're failing to relax sound like the least relaxing thing ever?

Make a game which requires 4 remotes and all 4 fingers, then create Wii Hospital Heartbeat Monitoring Machine so people can simulate being on a hospital bed... in their house!

Where's my Wii Vitality Sensor compatible Death Note Wii game?!

WiiRelax. WiiRelax.

This is what they have in mind to help their stalled sales, due to a lack of blockbuster titles (by their own admition).

Wii-f*cking-Relax.

Innovation in gaming isn't supposed to be putting us to sleep. I don't think I like where gaming is going for Nintendo. Rumblings of the Wii HD are increasing a bit. Maybe that will get them on track. =|

I know I sound like I'm whining about casual games, but putting us to sleep...? I think I'm jaded.

With what, my sub-conscience?

Anyway, honestly, it isn't that the game isn't interesting in its own right, but I think the timing could be better on their part. Then again, it is likely only one of at least a few titles for it, so I shouldn't get too upset yet. I just hope the whole line-up isn't of the like. Don't you?
