As far as serious built-in gimmicks go, I REALLY can't think of a thing. I might just be unimaginitive, but really, what is left? All I can think of is them twisting the visuals somehow, perhaps multi-layered screens for some reason?!

Hey, I just thought of something; maybe we should make a list of what we want to take OUT of the DS? I checked another forum and noticed someone mention the retarded Friend Codes and how they shouldn't use them again. I completely agree.

The reason motion sensing doesn't work on a handheld is that you often use them while you're already moving. A tilt sensor on a bus is a recipe for hours of Game-Over frustration.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

There's a lot of room for innovation in product, it doesn't necessarily have to directly affect the game. Imagine, for instance, entirely customizable button and screen locations. They could do that, if they were really gunning for it.

But that wouldn't be very marketable. It'd be cool, but would require little more than a bullet point on the back of the box or on a website.

I really think a multi-layered screen would be cool, kinda mess with depth perception.

Nintendo Files Patent for DS with Rumble Feature?

Quote:
So rumors are flying that Nintendo is already hard at work on the DS 2, and it might even be revealed at E3 in June. But can we add to those rumors that it might also feature built-in rumble functionality, too? Maybe! A patent filing by Nintendo has been dug up that describes how a "game apparatus" with an "LCD and a touch pad" would initiate a rumble feature depending on what's happening in the game, which would then be felt by the player through the stylus (Broke My Controller, via Kotaku).

This filing is actually an addendum to a patent filed by Nintendo in 2005, and describes this rumble feature through the example of attacking a character in a game. "In a case that the enemy character exists at a depth of a game screen, little damage is applied to the enemy character, and a weak vibration is applied to the game apparatus," the filing confusingly explains. "Conversely, in a case that the enemy character exists at a front of the game screen, much damage is applied to the character, and a strong vibration is applied to the game apparatus. In either case, the vibrations are transmitted to the fingers or hands of the player via the stick." (Don't even think about it.)

So in other words, strong attacks mean more rumble, weak attacks less. But could this actually be a new feature planned for the heavily-rumored-but-still-unannounced DS 2? Or, as can often be the case with patents, simply an idea or prototype Nintendo filed to have it protected but may never actually use?

Guess we'll just have to wait until E3 to find out, along with (hopefully) a whole lot of other DS news.
The mystery deepens.

Built-In rumble isn't exactly the surprise I was expecting, but it is welcome.

That doesn't sound like "strong vs. weak", that sounds like "near vs. far". In other words, if you pick off a guy in the distance with a gun/arrow/whatever, it'll be a very weak rumble, but if a guy is coming up right behind you & you turn around & stab him, it'll be a very strong rumble.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Obligitory.

THIS IS THE RUMBLE PACK!

To be fair, Nintendo made Rumble a console norm, so I guess making it first for handhelds isn't that weird.

Handhelds had it already, just not built-in.

Did I misread the article or is the stylus what rumbles?

That sounds hilariously unwieldy. Too bad it's been done.

Yeah, this isn't about a rumble pack. Besides, the DS already has one that works through the GBA slot.
