3DS Discussion Thread (Formerly 3DS Announcement)

Destructoid - DS successor confirmed, will have motion control

Quote:
For the first time, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has openly discussed a Nintendo DS successor and some of the features that will be included in this two-screened behemoth. While the last DS was a humble system based on a number of gimmicks that served it very well, the next DS will be bringing some real horsepower to the table ... along with motion control.

"[It will have] highly detailed graphics, and it will be necessary to have a sensor with the ability to read the movements of people playing," Iwata tells Japanese newspaper Asashi Shimbun. Until now, motion tracking devices have been available for the DS in peripheral form. The next generation of DS will include such input as standard.

The prospect of a new DS is exciting, although I hope the motion control isn't over-the-top. It's bad enough expecting us to blow into a microphone while on the bus -- waving our arms around in public is just asking for trouble. In any case, are you excited for a more powerful DS, or are you still happy with the old one ... sorry, old four.
Hmmmmmmmm.

I'm sure they aren't expecting you to shake the console in a crowded subway. Drawing is one thing, but moving around is different.

Snap. Click. Snap. Click.

Shaking a hinged device sounds dangerous.

All it takes is a small shake and my DS's top screen flops in an undesired direction and adds up to its wear and tear.

The designers have some work ahead of them.

I knew it. After New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Nintendo got the idea from seeing people accidentally shaking their DS while playing NSMB.

In one word: Lame.

In more words: Way more innovation than needed. The DSi is cool(somewhat), but this is just rediculous. Way to make us look like idiots Nintendo...

Nintendo is in the business of making money.

If you do not like this system you are living in the past. You are also old, and require pain medication.

Enjoy your Artificial Hip, wrinklefaces. I'll be playing things that are fun.

I recall shaking my PS3 controller a few times during LBP. Damn you NSMB.

Iwata Explains DS Successor Quote Confusion

Quote:
The skirmish of words between Nintendo president Satoru Iwata and Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun has been volleying shots back and forth, and now Iwata has explained where the confusion may have started. Kotaku reports that in a recent investor call, Iwata declined to talk specifically about new hardware in development, like the company's next handheld. But, he said in the interview with Asahi Shimbun, the reporter asked, "The graphics for the next DS will be highly detailed and it will contain a motion sensor, right?" Iwata says he replied, "Those things are naturally being required. But do you think it would sell with just that?"

If Iwata's claim is true, then Asahi Shimbun was accurate in their initial report, but that accuracy was based on a bit of a leading question, and the paper was actually quoting its own reporter instead of Iwata. Also, they seem to have left out a piece of Iwata's reply that he feels was important. It seems he wants to stress that features like better graphics and a motion sensor are obviously going to be included, but Nintendo is looking to introduce more than just that. This could close the book on this particular media fight, unless the newspaper comes back with a comment of its own -- which is entirely possible.

Nintendo DS Successor Reportedly in the Hands of Developers

Quote:
The Nintendo DS continues to sell incredibly well month after month, but that doesn't mean Nintendo isn't thinking about the future. One particular plan involving a successor to the DS might be closer to a reality than some would think. A new rumor (via GoNintendo) regarding the DS2 claims that developers already have the system in their possession. Following up on that, CVG is now reporting that DS2 development kits are indeed in the hands of "select developers in Japan." Not only that, but the system includes a motion-sensing feature that one anonymous developer with access to the system described as "a 'tilt' function that's not dissimilar to iPhone," but added that it "does a lot more."

Among the third party companies that have access to the DS2 is The Pokemon Company, which the source said "are getting special attention with it."

CVG's source doesn't believe the system will be shown at the annual Game Developers Conference, which runs from March 9 - 13. "Any kind of March announcement wouldn't fit with the timeline I understand the second DS to be on," he explained. Therefore, don't expect to see the new DS revealed at the Nintendo Media Summit next Wednesday, though 1UP will be there in any event.

Just last month, it was reported that Nintendo president Satoru Iwata (supposedly) dropped some hints about a possible DS2, including a mention of a motion sensor. That he ever said anything of the sort was refuted, and various shots were fired between Nintendo and the newspaper that originally reported on Iwata's comments. Regardless of who was actually correct in their recollection of events, it would seem that there was some truth to both the motion sensor comment and the existence of the DS2.

E3 is once again planned for June this year, and that seems like as good a venue as any for revealing something like the DS2.
A tilt function? That doesn't sound so crazy.

I think the Nintendo President mentioned wanting to add more than just motion sensing capabilities. Besides a microphone, touch screen, and motion control, what is left for innovation? I can't imagine anything.

Maybe like 3D glasses or something? God, I don't know.
