New Nintendo hardware on the way?

Shigeru Miyamoto Discusses New Nintendo Hardware

Quote:
After ages of speculation and rumors, Nintendo has finally confirmed that they're developing a new gaming system... sort of. During this year's Annual Japan Media Arts Festival, beloved game designer Shigeru Miyamoto talked up the projects he's currently working on: the next Legend of Zelda for the Wii, some kind of Motion-Plus-enabled game, and Nintendo's next hardware release (via Andriasang).

The Mario creator didn't get down to specifics on the device, but this is still the first real acknowledgement of new hardware by one of the higher-ups at Nintendo. We'll have to wait and see whether he's referring to the rumored Wii HD, a successor to the DS, or something totally unexpected.
Hmmm, interesting. Aside from a successor to the Wii or the DS, I don't really know what it could be. Any thoughts?

I've been hearing rumors about this for weeks.

Oh! Never mind then.

It would be nice to see something other than a Wii2 or DS5.
I'm interested in what they come up with.

I think a Wii HD would probably be the best idea at this point, as 1080P is one of the major things lacking. That, and a slightly beefier processor.

They could perhaps also launch it with a non-motion controller as a main option (using Gamecube ports).

Then they could start making inroads on the whole 'mainstream' area while maintaining dominance in 'casual.'

Huh, didn't realize they were calling it that. Also it's hardly anything exciting, just a bigger screen and a (supposedly) longer battery life.

Am I the only person who thinks motion controls are harder to use than pushing buttons? I mean, they're cool for a few things here and there and they make my FPS games seriously amazing, but they're not for everything. Relegating extra commands to crap like swinging the nunchuck is functional, but not easy to remember. The Wii is literally the first system where I have a hard time remembering the primary controls for some games. I really hope they resolve this with future releases somehow.

If I were making a Wii game, and I wanted to make it actually user friendly without being really effing obnoxious and jamming an hour of tutorials into the beginning of every game, I would have a quick-reference screen to review controls on-screen live during a game. And another thing the Wii can't do well, is custom control settings. I'm certain I could come up with better control schemes than many devs have bothered to, honestly.

^I don't know about the customization part; I finally took a few minutes to learn the nunchuck-style controls for Brawl, & once I messed with the customization it became really fluid. Admittedly, Brawl has no motion controls.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Yeah the motion control stuff I dig in stuff like The Conduit, CoD, Metroid Prime and sports games, but for RPGs and fighting games i just prefer the GC controller. Though stuff like WarioLand: Shake It! and NSMBWii are good with the sideways control scheme with a little bit of function.

If this is actually new hardware and not just another DS upgrade I'll start saving my money. Maybe Wii Hard Drive Add-On now possible? I ****ing hate saving extra stuff to SD cards.

Hey ZG, did you hear that Val's even in pull-ups, now? He's a big boy.

Children, children...

I don't think controls should be forced into being Motion Controls or Stylus Controls. Or anything other than what works best. Otherwise, it is just a dead gimmick, which is not something I want to happen, since they both have their uses.

I adapted pretty well to Stylus Controls but there's something of about Motion Controls. I think it might be the controllers themselves, and/or the lack of accurate responses. Mostly the lack of accuracy though. The damn things need more than a Motion Plus or whatever, I'm sure. I need pin-point accuracy.

I have not had a single problem with accuracy on my wii plus motion. It has helped my fps and regular games as well. The reason you don't have pinpoint accuracy is that your hand is twitching and the sensor senses that. It's all about finding that perfect balance with you and your wii mote.

I haven't actually even tried the Plus, but from what I played with the regular Wii, ther's virtually no accuracy, to the point where it made TP a chore to play.

I'm guessing the Plus can't help much, but I may be surprised.

TP doesn't make intense use of the cursor. I've got no problem playing games like House of the Dead, Umbrella Chronicles, or Red Steel with the Wii remote. It's likely you're having problems because you haven't recalibrated it for your distance or angle from the screen. For games with precision controls, that's very important.
