Nintendo Implementing Stronger Anti-Piracy Measures in 3DS

Nintendo Implementing Stronger Anti-Piracy Measures in 3DS

Quote:
Continuing efforts to battle piracy on Nintendo's handheld consoles, president Satoru Iwata confirmed plans to implement stronger anti-piracy measures in the upcoming 3DS.

Piracy has become a serious problem in Asia and Europe, and has contributed to the drop in software sales, Iwata said (via Mercury News).

"We fear a kind of thinking is become widespread that paying for software is meaningless," he said. "We have a strong sense of crisis about this problem."

Iwata wouldn't go into detail about the new measures, saying that it would give "hints" to pirates on how to defeat it.

Nintendo's move is the latest in its longrunning war with Wii and DS pirates. Like Sony, they have utilized continued firmware updates on those platforms in an effort to lock out homebrew channels and flash carts.

No 3DS details have been released yet, which makes it difficult to imagine what sort of measures Nintendo will attempt. Firmware updates will almost certainly play a large role in locking out potential pirates.

No release date has been announced yet for the 3DS. It should be out in North America early next year.

^ Give us a good reason to stop the pirating and hacking first. I agree that pirates need to be jailed, no question, but the hacking is only because Nintendo is poorly providing many things. Friend Codes are fine and all, but the online is ****ty. I mean, I don't expect it to be really, really, good, but this is just pathetic.

1 VC a week is why most people hack, since we have to wait forever sometimes for a decent game. The other reason is because they just want to fix a lot of a certain game's problems and/or oversights.(both which plague Brawl) The other, OTHER reason is because we can't even use a Cheat Device OFFLINE. I agree that online cheaters suck(no pun intended), but why should we get shafted just because we're not as good as some others?

And yes, this applies to any system cheat-wise. Frankly, if someone is cheating online, they deserve to be banned. Offline shouldn't matter, though.

I do hope they do a much better job this time around. If they can easily ban people for cheating online on the old DS/DSi, why can't they just do that on the Wii? So far, all they've done with the firmware updates on the Wii is piss people off. Half of them are crap, some are even glitchy, and some are even more useless than crap.(a new clock look is crap, but technically not useless. One only done to brick wiis/get rid of hacks IS)

To say the least, if I wanted a hacked offline only Wii, I'd probably but another one. But hey, that's how I'd do it.(with that said, I abhore cheating online and refuse to, regardless of who may do, and so on)

I'm sure pirating and hacking will not effect online. Unless you're destroying the game's online mode to make your own, in which case, good luck finding anyone to join you.

You can just get the game some other if you think Nintendo is too slow releasing them. If you hack your Wii just to get some old-ass game onto it, I do not feel sorry for whatever problems you get for it.

You think Brawl has problems.

If it's to stop cheaters, then how are you getting shafted? A good anti-cheat device should go unnoticed by non-cheaters, so yeah.

It really depends on what you're talking about. Ideally, any pirating is bad, even if it's for personal use.

Guess what you shouldn't be doing then. Personally, I've had no problems with my Wii whatsoever (knockonwood)

^ Because the only way to cheat offline on Wii is to hack. Every regular cheat device made was rendered useless by Nintendo, since they apparently believe that EVERYONE will INDEFINATELY cheat online.

If people have the opportunity TO cheat online, they WILL. It doesn't even matter if it requires a cheating device or not - if it doesn't, it's just EASIER to do. How many glitches in Team Fortress 2 were relentlessly abused before they fixed 'em? Or even in some games like EverQuest or World of Warcraft?

And don't get me started on the amount of hacking in Quake and Counter-Strike. But that's what happens when you have player-run servers, where you practically have to be hacking to catch up to all the noclippers.

^ I think it depends the series. If two players are facing eachother ONLY online and use certain hacks, that's fine, I.E. a Costume hack in Brawl. However, screwing over other players is NOT. I abhore that kind of thing. What you do against computers is your own business, because seriously, who cares? If it makes you a worse player in the end, it's your problem, no one else's.

And Tazy, Brawl does have many problems, including useless crap(do we need all those specific Masterpieces. It heavily slows down the game, and that's the biggest problem as is. There's also the rather boring SSE, the forced character selection in the SSE(more than typical, that is), and way too many trophies we don't need.)

Of course, for Tripping, Your Mileage May Vary, as it does have its uses, save for competition. I hate a lot of the new items, and the lack of some of the better old items(Red Shell, Cloaking Device(I can understand this one being removed though), and the Parasol(same here)). I mean seriously, why remove the Red Shell? And for what...more explosives?! I'm pretty sure we didn't need the Gooey Bomb(I kind of like Smart Bomb, if only for the Starfox rep). The Smoke Ball can also steam in hell.

But this isn't the topic for it.

They just need better online enforcement. Piracy is a fact of life; they should make it harder to do, but if they hamper paying customers too much with anti-piracy, then they're screwing themselves over.

I personally believe Brawl is the best so far, even with some of it's problems (I fail to see how the Red Shell and Cloaking Device were little else than annoying though.) But, yeah not the topic for it.

Still, as a business, ideally, you want no hacking to ever occur, since doing so makes the game different than what you originally had in mind. That being said, I personally believe that if the hacker isn't copying the game, then I'm alright with it's existance.

I believe the Anti-Piracy on the 3DS is mostly because they wither fear that it'll be hacked like the PSP, or They don't want people stealing apps or something like that. (<_>)

Online game hackers are dip****s that ruin it for everyone. The number 1 reason why Nintendo cannot allow mods is because they can create exploits in the software.

Piracy isn't as big a deal as they'd like to make it, though. Publishers apply the logic that downloaded games would be bought if they weren't downloaded. There's no direct connection save that a person who's downloaded a game illegally is less likely to replay the game by paying for it. If they're compelled to get the game for free or cheaper than full price, though, they'll probably just head to the used market like I do.
