Japan Has Logged Over 1 Million Hours in Super Mario World

Japan Has Logged Over 1 Million Hours in Super Mario World

Quote:
Sunday, November 21st was the twentieth anniversary of the Super Famicom, the Japanese predecessor to the Super Nintendo. This means that Super Mario World, one of two launch titles, is also 20 years old. To commemorate the occasion, Japanese gaming blog Inside Games looked at the official play statistics from Nintendo for Super Mario World on the Wii's Virtual Console. The numbers are impressive.

According to the report, Japanese gamers have played Super Mario World 1,360,629 times for a total of 1,066,109 hours. That's over 121 years of playtime in just under four years on the digital marketplace. Per user, that breaks down to 13.59 times and 10 hours, 40 minutes.

However, November 21st is also the anniversary of the Japanese release of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. That game originally came out one year after Super Mario World but the two games were released simultaneously on the Virtual Console. Inside Games looked at Zelda's numbers as a point of comparison.

Nintendo's statistics show that Japanese gamers have played Link to the Past 292,454 times for a total of 385,811 hours, a mere 44 years. However, the average gamer played Zelda more times (18.88) and for longer (11 hours, 43 minutes) than Mario.
It's funny, I just replayed SMW the other day.

That's cool. I wish each individual Wii kept track of total play times.

I know they do for each day, but I mean all-time.

Does this seem a bit low to anyone else?

Seriously. It feels like they'd have at least ten times that much, for some reason.

That's a lot less than what I would've guessed. 1 million hours over 4 years for ~100,000 users aren't exactly mind-blowing numbers.

Because there a lot of time was spent waiting for Pokey to move faster.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"
