Hang gliding is purely about maintaining momentum in the air, as there's no accelerator to get you moving again in a pinch. Airplanes feature speed boosts and can roll to either side, making it the fastest way to get around. Jet packs are a kind of amalgam of the other two, since you'll rely on your engines to keep yourself aloft but you'll need to glide at times to conserve your fuel.

While the game features "missions" that will send you after rings or orbs, I opted to try the "free flight" mode instead to experiment with all three flying machines. It turned out that "free" mode wasn't entirely free after all; a timer restricted me to only a few minutes per outing. There is an objective to free mode in that you may collect information about the island by touching special floating icons. The game keeps track of which ones you've found over time and your best performance re: number of icons per flight.

While all three modes put a smile on my face, my favorite of the bunch was the jet pack. The controls demanded a soft touch; there are two levels of acceleration, but in both cases you must carefully aim yourself with the slide pad. Push all the way forward and you lose altitude; fail to push forward enough and you simply go straight up. There's also a hover button that keeps you in place (at the cost of quicker fuel consumption), and pressing the R-button gives a view directly below your Mii that proves useful in pinpointing your position. This viewpoint benefits a lot from the console's 3D display as the illusion of depth made me feel legitimately high up, much more so than my altimeter ever could.
Can't have a proper Tech Demo until you have Pilotwings.

I'm actually pretty interested in this, as it's very likely a carry-over of the Gamecube Pilotwings game that never saw release. It was rumored to have switched development to the Wii. This game featuring the Wii Resort island actually supports that very well.

I allso heard that there was one for the GC but i thought they scrapped it all togheter when the Wii was realeased and The last game from nintendo for the Console would be Twilight princess.

I just don't think a lot of GC is in the 3DS one as it have been a couple of years since it was starting development and then we had to wait a long time for it to emerge from on the wii.

But then they might as well have went, screw this shelve it until we have the Technology to bring the suckers something awesome.

More Pilotwings Resort screens and a slice of info | 3DS Tribe

This looks really good. Maybe TOO good...

Nonetheless, I'm most likely going to grab this with my 3DS.

So, I still haven't "officially" beaten the game, although I've gotten nearly everything in Free Flight and I'm on the Platinum missions. It is short, but honestly, not as short as everyone makes it out to be. Maybe I'm just bad at flight games or I'm not playing it enough since I do take frequent breaks after playing the system for, say, an hour. Still, it does burn a nice few hours, and if you find flying games to be fun, it may be worth the money.

Interesting enough, I know AI said something about how the Wii was supposed to, at one point, have a Pilotwings. Indeed, there is a mode in Wii Sports Resort where you can fly around in a plane for about five minutes, collecting landmark tokens much like you can do in Pilotwings Resort. At least the game play is different enough between flying the plane in Pilotwings Resort and Wii Sports Resort that I can let it slide.
