It actually looks good, and I mean literally. It's for the DS, has 3D graphics, and the direction was good enough to make it not look like a hobo's work on a PSX game (that means you, Phantom Hourglass). Here's a review for it on IGN: Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light Review - Nintendo DS Review at IGN |

I thought it had been out for at least a little while though. Seems pretty cool. Probably something the newer generation of players could try to get into the first game. Looks kinda epic. |

The targeting system was my biggest gripe, in that you cannot target an enemy specifically. Think Ogre Battle, where your characters just attack the enemy that seems to make the most sense. (except in FHoL you do not get to set tactics) Since the AI does not always have the same priorities as you, (I.E. KILL THAT STATUS EFFECT SPAMMING WIZARD!!!) your characters will not always attack the most important targets first. (although melee attacks hit the front row and spells/missiles usually target the back, so you can somewhat predict) The same system applies to healing and item usage. Use a potion, and hope it goes to the right character. Of course, since you spend half the game with two characters (or less) in your party, that is not too big a deal, but in the latter half when you have a full party, it can be a huge pain. The MP system is gone, replaced with Action Points instead. I actually like this feature, but some others do not. Every action takes AP, even your basic attack command. You regain one point at the end of every turn, so basic attacks can be used constantly, but you need to save up AP for bigger spells and summons. The game has a reputation for being immensely difficult, but I tend to play every game I own on hard right from the get-go, so this felt just right to me. It is substantially more difficult than the average RPG though, and you will most likely die several times throughout the course of the game. And grinding will not save you from this game's level scaling. I say pick it up when you have the money, assuming you can deal with frustrating moments (NO! YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO GIVE THAT ELIXIR TO THE GUY WHO IS DYING!!) and a little difficulty. |
