Wii U

THE SEQUEL TO THE WII HAS COME

Quote:
We knew a new Nintendo system would be confirmed during today's E3 media briefing, and the house of Mario didn't disappoint.

Known as the Wii U, the system sports a controller that is equipped with a touchscreen and has buttons and analog sticks on either side. It looks as if you can also attach a nunchuk-type attachment. There is a camera located at least on the back and content can be moved from one screen to the other seamlessly. The controller's screen was also shown displaying extra information for an awfully nice looking Zelda title.

The system will be out in 2012. More details to come.

Uhh.

Thoughts?

From what I've seen so far, I'm fairly interested in the capabilities of the controller. I'd like to see it in action before I can really have an opinion on it, though.

If that demo they showed was any indication, I'm real interested.

Terrible name.

I can't wait to hear stories of mothers buying the WiiU controller and then being frustrated when it doesn't work with the Wii.

At first I was iffy with the Wii U by the original trailer. I was like "so basically it's another Wii and it's gonna have that same style with a focus on casual games"

and then 3rd party developers were like ARKHAM CITY ASSASSINS CREED NINJA GAIDEN BITCH

and I was like "oh ok nvm"

Once again, Nintendo doesn't disappoint when it comes to terrible names for their consoles. =\

Anyways, looks interesting. Also looks needlessly expensive though. Sorta reminds me of the Dreamcast controllers that no one liked.

Wii U Hardware Specs: 1080p, 10.5-Inch Wide Controller

Quote:

Nintendo has released some hardware specifications for its newly-announced Wii U. Its internal components weren't detailed but we do have some other interesting information.

The controller is about 1.8 inches thick, almost 7 inches tall, and just over 10.5 inches wide. The touchscreen measures in at 6.2 inches and has a 16x9 aspect ratio. It has an integrated rechargeable battery, accelerometer, gyroscope, rumble, front-facing camera, power button, microphone, speakers, and two circle pads (Nintendo's name for the unit's not-quite-analog sticks). It's also equipped with all of the same buttons seen on a Wii Classic Controller: a Home button, d-pad, A/B/X/Y buttons, and L/R buttons, plus ZL/ZR. The controller also comes with a stylus as seen above.

Wii U is fully backwards compatible with all Wii games and accessories, including the Wii Remote, Balance Board, Classic Controller, Nunchuk, etc. It can be connected through HDMI, component, S-video, and composite cables (and possibly D-terminal). It can output video from 480i all the way up to 1080p, and it can also do six-channel audio output.

The system uses optical discs that are the same physical size as the Wii's 12-centimeter discs. Their storage capacity is currently unknown. It was rumored at one point to be capable of holding up to 25GB on a single disc; that may turn out to be correct, as the other aspect of that rumor -- eschewing hard drives in favor of flash-based internal storage -- has turned out to be correct. You can expand upon the system's included flash memory by using either SD cards or external hard drives connected through USB (there are four USB ports total).
And here's some videos:

Wii U E3 2011 Tech Demo Video from GameVideos

I've got to say, I'm psyched now.

this is amazing

all you people saying "controller looks weird" and "name lol" seem to have missed, somehow, that its graphics are better then the ps3 and it actually has serious, real, third party launch support.

i'm pretty sure i've loved every nintendo console since the DS because nintendo actually goes for new stuff instead of GRAPHICS ARMS RACE and in this case unlike the wii they aren't even sacrificing any support.

plus you probably won't see a console from sony or microsoft until 2013 at the earliest.

Or if you do it won't be a huge improvement because they rushed it out. welcome to red ring part 2 heh

"Yay 3rd-party games"

In the 3DS thread, weren't you all mad at Nintendo for having a lot of third party games at launch?

Um, no, it was about Nintendo having horrible first-party support at 3DS launch.

I agree, that controller looks iffy, but it's already better than the Wiimote.

I'd like to hear more about this in the future.

I don't know... Sounds like it's only a little more powerful than the PS3.
Not that I care much about graphics, but it's still more or less even with the current gen. Old technology. I'll have to wait and see.
