Monster Hunter 3: Tri

Soo I got this game a while back and I think I'm addicted. One of my favorite games altogether, and one of the best I've played on the Wii.

I was wondering if anyone besides myself and Mushman played this.. and wondered perhaps if anyone played online?...

(I was thinking this would fit in either Nintendo or Capcom forums so I chose here)

I still need to take on the Borroth, so you are probably out of my league by now.

Haha you mean Barroth?

and Maybe. :P I'm in the 5 stars still, haven't faced Caedus and a few others, includint the online exclusives. Only 2 stars at hunter rank 9 online though, so not so far ahead in that respect.

Something weird Ive been thinking of lately, isn't killing a monster and taking it's bones, scales, and/or other parts to make yourself more powerful just like a very primal version of copying abilities in Megaman? >.> Way to go Capcom! You don't just copy bosses; you copy yourself as well!

I played it for a while, but got bored of it being a total grindfest with zero new locations for most of the game. Also, I was expecting some proper co-op play. You can get more out of Children of Mana or Phantasy Star Online and have basically the same experience.

A game about Tritoch? I bet he'd come back to talk about that!

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

How long did you play? I know it takes a long time to really get to the good parts of it, but once you're there it's addicting. On the online, it has great co-op. I didn't really find anything wrong with the co-op to be honest.

Yeah though the lack of new locations was a bit of a drag at first, even after you go through the game, you only really have The Island, The Sandy Plains, Flooded Forest, Tundra, and Volcano. They're all fairly interesting, not to mention beautiful, but I can't help but feel there's something missing... There really shouldn't be, I mean it seems that they covered almost every type of area that you can find on Earth.

When it comes to grinding, yes it takes alot, but it feels very rewarding once you finally get that kill because of the time and preparation you took to get ready. and the grinding itself can become addicting as well, in particular the armor and weapon upgrading/making and the item combo system. Sadly parts of the game, in particular the steep learning curve, make it dislikeable to some. It's definitely not a pick-up-and-play, not til you get deep into it anyway, and even then..

Split screen co-op amounts to a Colosseum versus mode. Didn't play the game much longer than something like 20 hours, found the same repetitive screens very boring.

Sounds like there's more places to go, which is sad because there was no hint of that, but I'm sure it'll just be repetitive and senseless grinding in a new spot.

Of course, the game lacks plot, too. For what amounts to a poaching sim, there isn't very much motivating me to live out the Japanese fantasy of killing rare new animals.

I should mention that I think crafting in every game it's ever been in has been a total waste of time.

Which actually translates into the single player mode, but it sad;ly feels kinda gimmicky since all it does i give you a bit of zenny and some coins to help you make new armors... but interestingly it can be fun to try and beat the time limits or even your own time; the better your time, the better the rewards.
but I was actually talking about the online co-op. It's epic. Pretty much it.

The motivation is supposed to kill monsters in order to help support a poor, remote village after an earthquake and to prepare yourself to take down the monster that caused the earthquake.

They do actually point out the fact that it could actually be tectonic shifts in a line to make fun of itself, but that's explained as well afterwards.

The story isn't meant to be an epic of Final Fantasy proportions. it's meant to be simplistic. To be honest, you couldn't fit an "epic" into a plot easily by treating EVERY enemy as an animal.

That said the plot is charmingly simplistic. Like how Mario, Megaman, or Kirby are essentially saving the world or the princess or whatever. It's simple and straight to the point which works perfectly for a game.

Also you took 20 hours playing without ever seeing anything other than the Moga Forest? Interesting...

And on the crafting thing: To each his own I guess.

EDIT: Another thing, it's also about learning from your opponent and adapting to them and figuring out the best ways to take them down, like any great boss fight, which can be very, very fun and very, very satisfying.
Not to mention figuring out just which of the several weapon styles you prefer, or just experimenting with different ones.
Getting your first perfect charge with a greatsword or completing your first spirit combo with a longsword feel very good.

Sorry if this is a long post, I just love bragging on this game. xD

Hey man, it's fine if you like it, I'm just saying it's basically PSO without a plot or good splitscreen. I would've played it more if it were possible to actually play co-op splitscreen, but it's just that colosseum thing afaik.

Yeah that arena co-op rather than true co-op was probably my biggest disappointment too, I have to admit.

I was pretty disgusted that you start out slaughtering docile herbivores and only take their bones or some **** from the carcass. You just killed something the size of a minivan. Why are you not harvesting the boatload of meat and hide from it as well? At least most games portray the things you're killing as hostile and disguise the poaching elements. MH:T just blatantly threw it out there, yes, you're killing a rhino just for its horn. GOOD JOB. THE VILLAGE WILL PROMOTE YOU TO CHIEFTAIN BEFORE YOU KNOW IT.

^ If I understand correctly, the village actually does make use of just about every single part of the monster you slay. The Hunt Report generates more than what you take from the corpse after killing it if you're in Free Hunt, and as well you're getting Resources as well, which I guess represent meat, skin, etc.
