I picked it up this afternoon and dang if it wasn't a pleasant surprise. First off the main game is super cute and just oozes character. The Kirbys are especially well animated and they way they move and interact with the environment is loaded with little touches. From the way they scamper up ledges when they just barely make it up to the way the last one through a door often stops for a split second to wave, to their facial expressions as they run through the level, you can really tell they put some extra effort into this game. The gameplay itself is what I can only describe as an odd mixture of 2d platforming and pikmin as you command your kirby army to swarm the enemies and hop over obstacles. It can get a little repetitive, but so far they've been constantly introducing elements to keep it interesting. See an enemy up in the air? Flick a few Kirbys up at it to weight it down and the pile your whole group on when it gets low enough. The whole game plays with the touchscreen, but unlike so many other game that seem to force it, this game was clearly designed to be played with a stylus. The controls are natural, responsive, and often times used for things that just wouldn't be possible with a D-pad and buttons. I think it's worth making note that the game is loaded with references to past kirby games, especially the unlockable minigames. I think I've seen multiple references to ever game in the series except for Kirby 64 so far, and I'm only in world 2. Speaking if the minigames, they seem like a fun distraction. So far the pinball game and the spaceshooter seem to be the most fleshed out, and are definately a step above the usual offerings. (I've always been a sucker for pinball.) Anyone else get it? I've got an odd feeling this one is going to be a classic. |
