Gimped Wii Replacing Original Model

It's not worth your money, so don't even consider buying it.

Nintendo.com.au

I'm not sure which territories it's releasing in, so if for god knows what reason you haven't got a Wii yet and are looking to buy one, make sure it's the original model that can play Gamecube games/has controller ports - this one doesn't and it doesn't replace that function with anything for value besides the Wii Remote Plus, as far as I can tell.

This reminds me of the quick succession of PS3 models, each worse than the last.

Yeah, I'm reminded heavily of that. I would have bought a PS3 if they kept hardware compatibility with the PS2, since I needed one of those for a few games, but I just kind of shrug whenever I wonder if a PS3 would be worth owning without it.

It would help if Square weren't the main draw to the PS2, and they haven't really had any kind of must-have outing on the PS3.

I think you're looking at this the wrong way. This isn't a redesign meant for gamers. Much like the SNES 2, I'm sure this is meant to be a cheaper system with less functionality for people on a tighter budget, and to be something of a gateway system. That said, from a brief search to get a good comparison going, it does seem like you can find a Wii with a similar package for cheaper than this model 2. So yeah, kind of pointless overall. Anyway it's going to wind up being a rare curiousity in ten to fifteen years time among another generation of internet-based videogame nerds. Pretty much like the NES toploader and SNES 2 now.

I'm definitely with Leinad. This is a console for a totally different crowd than us.

It's... strange since it's the same price as the Mario Kart Wii bundle.

It's the Game Boy Micro of the Wii, I'd say.

Honestly? No, it's just to save cash for Nintendo so they don't have to keep putting GCN units in them. It doesn't cost less.

I suppose that's true. Nintendo has had a weird history of doing this, though.

How much is a Wii now? I think the Mario Kart bundle is $150, so if this were priced at $99, it'd be considerable.

They're trying to recoup money from somewhere. They've been bleeding money due to the failure of the 3DS, and making the Wii margin bigger helps fix that.

You haven't seen the reports of their profits collapsing and the execs all taking a massive pay cut?

Nintendo should've seen the 3DS failure coming with the horrific launch titles. I got one for the sole purpose of OoT and as a future investment [there's a LOT of great stuff for that console due for the FUTURE...], but I understand why pretty much everyone else didn't.

This Wii, on the other hand, is dumb. Backwards compatibility is A HUGE SELLING POINT, at least for me. I use my Wii to play gamecube games almost MORE often than Wii games now that I don't have a gamecube anymore. And I've spent equal time playing DS and 3DS games on my 3DS.

Stupid game developers

The 360 is a huge business failure. I don't know the stats for PS3.

I guess the 3DS struggling in the sense that it hasn't really met Nintendo's expectations yet. (expectations: OUTSELL GOD) I hesitate to use 'failure' though because it has sold pretty well and it's not as bad as actual failures in the past.

Um, really? That doesn't sound right, though Microsoft did lose a ****ton of money from that RROD business.
