PA News: More Brits Believe in Ghosts and Aliens than in God

More Brits Believe in Ghosts and Aliens than in God
Supernatural Brits are Nation of Believers
51% of the nation class themselves as ‘believers’

The nation’s beliefs are changing, according to new research, with 58% of Brits stating they believe in aliens and ghosts compared to the 54% who confirmed their belief in a God. Shaking off the sceptical stereotype that haunts the nation, it emerged that 51% of Brits classed themselves as ‘believers’ in a study which assessed the UK’s views on the paranormal.

Whilst the Brits are often seen as a sceptical nation, key findings from the research, commissioned to mark the DVD release of The X-Files: I Want to Believe, would beg to differ. A massive 59% of those surveyed stated they were open to the idea that ghosts and aliens exist whilst nearly a quarter had experienced their own paranormal encounter.

Channelling the X-Files most-famous believer Fox Mulder, the UK-wide survey found that women were bigger believers than men with 61% open-minded to the supernatural compared to just 54% of men. As well as being firm believers, women are also more open to paranormal experiences with 44% prepared to visit a medium and over a quarter admitting to using an Ouija board at one point in their lives.

Those aged 60-70 were sceptical with 64% describing themselves as cynical about the paranormal, however it was the over 70’s who felt the strongest, with 57% of those surveyed outright refuting the existence of supernatural entities. The most open-minded were those aged between 20 and 30 with a whopping 62% prepared to believe in the existence of paranormal life-forms. They were also the most likely to consult their horoscopes, with the over 60’s the least likely.

With Mulder’s believers outnumbering Scully’s sceptics the British public are clearly becoming more in-tune with their supernatural sixth-sense. Those who still aren’t convinced ‘the truth is out there’ should pay a visit to Ireland as the region boasts the highest number of people reporting paranormal sightings. Nearly a quarter of those surveyed from the Emerald Isle admitted to having a supernatural encounter, yet despite the evidence they remained the most cynical with 57% describing themselves as non-believers. The Scots were the most open-minded in nearly every aspect with 48% stating they would be interested in visiting a medium. 65% also admitted to being superstitious, the highest figure in the UK.

The survey was commissioned by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment to celebrate the release of The X-Files: I Want to Believe available on DVD and Blu-ray from the 24th November 2008. The film follows paranormal favourites Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) as they battle to solve a terrifying mystery in the eerie snowfields of rural Virginia.

Key findings:
• 79% feel the British public are viewed as a cynical race

• 51% of Brits class themselves as believers

• 59% support the existence of ghosts and aliens

• 37% of people surveyed put aliens and ghosts at the top of their belief systems

• Men are more sceptical than women

• The biggest believers were those aged 21-30 (62%)

• The most sceptical were the over 60’s with 45% categorically stating they do not believe in ghosts or aliens

This survey was conducted by 72 Point to coincide with the DVD release of The X-Files: I Want to Believe and 3000 people took part.

You're absolutely right, since all people who believe in God are Westboro Baptists.

Here, here. Now they can instead claim to have been kidnapped and brain-washed by aliens to hate things, or even blame being possessed by evil ghosts or spirits. Much better.

Not believing in god isn't going to stop people from hating each other.

You need to get rid of all their other imaginary friends too.

Well, god damn. I'd have to say that poor chaps definitely got some seriously major hygienic issues. Jesus. Absolutely hilarious! Cheers Darkness, I honestly needed a good laugh.
