Well, a number of things lead me to believe that there's something fishy about this story.

1. Writing does not randomly appear inside sealed passages.
2. The stench was probably that of sulfur, from deep within the earth. (Possibly near a volcanic area)
3. It seems too convenient that the page would cut off before their 'return' like that--as if it's intentionally being written that way.
4. It's easy to get spooked in absolute darkness, not to mention with the wind like that.
5. The things he hallucinated were caused by paranoia and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Now of course, what he's probably trying to infer is something like a 'passage to hell' or something, but if that were true, we would have bored into such a place years ago with our drills.

Of course, it's well written and executed, but... it's clearly fantasy material.
