Half-Life 2 Late Bloomer

After the game has been out for 3-4 years, I finally bought Half-Life 2 yesterday.

I have to say that it is probably the best FPS I have played on PC.

(the version I bought also came with the online multiplayer version, that I have yet to try)

Once you finish it, grab episode 1 off steam. Steam's pretty much the way to go, the only boxed releases you're going to find for episode II is going to be the $50 orange box in october (HL2, HL2 Ep. 1, HL2 Ep. 2, Portal, Team Fortress II). I mean, I guess if you don't grab Ep. 1, its worth it then, and you can give a code away to someone who doesn't have it.

Some of the Source based multiplayer games are pretty good. I loved Day of Defeat Source when it first hit, but I haven't played it in a while. Counterstrike is counterstrike. Red Orchestra is really good.

Not sure on the player communities. Last time I tried HL2's deathmatch, I couldn't really find a server.

HL2 was fun. Alyx is hot, and killing people with radiators is fun.

Or you could go with the Black Box, which just has Ep. 2, Portal, and Team Fortress 2.

I never heard of Valve's Steam service before getting the game and I was a little confused when it started installing when I put in the disc.

Steam can be jarring at first. It's basically a copy/protection format combined with a storefront. The one thing I do like is that if you enter your serials from older games in the series (HL1, both expansions, CS, mods, etc), it stores it in your account and allows you to just d/l the game files without needing the discs. Since I'm on my 3rd computer since Steam started, this has really come in handy since my discs are in some sort of box-layered hell after moving 3 or 4 times in the same time period. You're generally not going to get a cheaper deal on Steam (though sometimes they have preorder specials), but it's great if you don't have stores with good PC game stocks around you (all of mine are hit/miss, Best Buy and Circuit City randomly stock it and the local EB/Gamestops stopped really carrying PC games outside of MMORPGs, the Sims and Blizzard box sets).

Not as fun as killing people with toilets.

I said the same thing. I'm pretty much grabbing Ep 2, TFII, and Portal via Steam.

I see now that you actually posted after YoshiFreak in the E3 topic. And then he posted again, leading me to believe nothing had been posted.

e: Also, I don't have a credit card, PayPal, etc. I'll have to pay my parents to buy these, it seems.

I was just playing right now and there were plenty of servers.

If I have one thing to say about Half-Life's multiplayer it's none-stop shooting.

I reccomend you download Garry's Mod. The newest version costs $10, but it's an interesting little way to spend some free time once you're done with the story and screwing with the Croyts and Chocolate Milk Kids on Counter-Strike.

You can build some pretty amazing stuff in Garry's Mod or set up some Rube-Goldberg machines. Of course, you'll have to do some fun things with the Gman or Breen, but be warned: The Ragdolls cause lag, be very careful about using them in multi-player.

And for those of you who've been sitting under a rock/WoW for the past few years, that's what all those Gman ytmnds and the comic Concerned is made from.
