Question

Hey. First time in this forum because it's the first time I've ever had a PC game-related problem. Here are my specs that matter:

Pentium IV 2.4GHz processor
80GB hard drive
512MB RAM
nVidia GeForce FX 5200 128MB

The reason I'm putting this up is because I upgraded my graphics card so my little brother could play Knights of the Old Republic. And it's cool as hell, mind you, but it's also got an amazingly slow frame rate when I have most of the graphical detail turned all the way down. I mean, I know my computer is a year old, but those are still some pretty damn nice specs if you ask me.

So I ask - is KotOR just so graphically intensive that my comp still cannot run it?

Is my own setup already so outdated it can't run most modern games? Is this goign to happen again if I purchase, say...Thief: Deadly Shadows?

Any input would be appreciated

Question

Does the frame rate crap out all the time or just in certain parts of the game?

Edit: Also, it would help if I knew the system reqs for KoTOR. >_>

When there are characters onscreen it drops. Whenever you're in a wide open area it drops. Whenever you're not in an empty hallway with your party and MAYBE one other person it drops.

Do you have other stuff running in the background at the same time, such as antivirus or various unnecessary Windows-related programs?

Hell no. I don't run anything but the game when I play a game. I'm not that stupid, the system memory can't be everywhere at once.

Even the smartest people can have a program slip by them from time to time that eats away at system resources. It wouldn't be good troubleshooting if I didn't ask questions like that.

Plus, you said this was the first time you've ever had a PC game-related problem so it's a natural question to ask.

How much of your hard drive have you used up? If you've used up too much it will slow down badly.I have that problem on my old computer, started slowing down my more graphical games first, and than I made it worse by installing a game or two, so now it all runs slow.Although, it was kind of old anyway, so I bought a new one at the beginning of the year.

Also, commenting on Tritochs last statement, you might want to check your computer for spyware. That can uses up A LOT of memory/RAM.I've had it on my computer once for any actual duration, and it got cleaned out by my firewall, so I was happy.Although you may want to listen to Tritoch or someone who knows more of want their talking about when it comes to PC hardware.I don't know if Tritoch knows more about it, but I'm not exactly a buff on that.Programs(sometimes) and games I can do, and offer up whatever I can think of.

I had the EXACT same problem on my other computer. Knight of the Old Republic works FINE on this computer, but downstairs it craps out. And this computer's got a worse graphics card. Eventually I went into the setting for Kotor, which are at default set up for people with Cray supercomputers, and turned everything down a few notches. It worked fine after that.

...until you get to the part where you're fleeing the planet in the ship and trying to blast the Sith fighters...

But anyway...
